I am searching for the date and attendance for the 1963 Browns-Colts
pre-season game. I have requested this a week ago with no reply. I was
informed of the score of that Browns home game, but nothing more.

Goodwill --

The game was a football doubleheader, with the New York Giants and the
Detroit Lions playing the first game, the Giants winning 24-21 and the
Browns losing 21-7 in the second game. It was played on Saturday,
Aug. 17, 1963.

?The crowd numbered 83,218, with several thousand fans standing in the
bleachers and in the end zone. It was the largest pro football crowd
in Cleveland?s history,? writes William Wallace in the Sunday New York
Times. That game would have been at Cleveland's old Municipal
Stadium, which is at the same site as the current Paul Brown Stadium
on the lakefront.

John Unitas played as quarterback for the Baltimore Colts. Jim
Ninowski and Frank Ryan (that?s actually Dr. Frank Ryan now) played as
quarterbacks for the Browns.

Google search strategy:
Use the Proquest Historical Newspapers service, a fee-based service
commonly available at many public libraries, to search the NY Times
index using ?
Browns AND Colts in the date range of July 1, 1963 to September 30, 1963.

Goodwill --

Thanks so much for the rating and the extra sum. I was attending
junior high school at the time in Cleveland Heights (Roosevelt Junior
High, which no longer exists) and remember the doubleheader vaguely.
Of course, I remember the Browns-Colts 1964 NFL Championship game much
more vividly . . .

Great answer. I attended the football doubleheader, but couldn't
remember the teams and scores, except that it was at Cleveland's
Municipal stadium. Odd that the NFL records, that i checked didn't
show that unique occasion.
