I run an in-home tutoring service and we are looking for an internet
application that works like Microsoft/Windows messenger's Whiteboard
which would allow us to, along with Skype, conduct in-home tutoring
sessions. Messenger is out because we have been having too many
issues (firewalls, glitches, etc). We also lookied into using WebX,
but at $.66 per minute, it was not in our prive range.

In short, we want a low cost (either in the $5-10 an hour range or an
unlimited use with a software purchase or licensing fee up to the
hundreds of dollars) internet application that would allow two people
to use a microsoft paint type program simultaneously to work on a math
problem together. Free would be best though :)

Assuming you're using a Windows operating system, Microsoft's
NetMeeting program should fill the bill perfectly. You may
even already have it installed on your system - just do a
Windows Explorer search for conf.exe or search your Start
menu for NetMeeting.

If it's not installed, you can download the latest version
(Version 3) from it's homepage. Even if you have it installed,
the latest version has been reviewed as having many added
improvements:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/netmeeting/

This page lists the functions it contains:

- Video and Audio Conferencing
- Chat
- File Transfer
- Program Sharing
- Remote Desktop Sharing
- Whiteboard

More on the page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/NetMeeting/Features/default.ASP

The whiteboard function does exactly what you're seeking, as
far as allowing two users to work on a shared drawing space.
See the complete description on this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/netmeeting/features/whiteboard/default.asp

But if you want, you can also open a program which would be
shared by the two users, such as the Windows Paint program.
See more about program sharing on this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/NetMeeting/Features/appshare/default.asp

And, if you like, you can even offer remote use of your
desktop to the other person, and vice-versa. See this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/NetMeeting/Features/RDS/default.ASP

All of the above can be accomplished while you're utilizing
text chat or even audio and video conferencing.

I know of no other program that offers this much functionality
at almost any price, and many businesses routinely use it in
their work.

And best of all, it's free.
