I have a couple of window air conditioners that are constantly
"freezeing"... with ice all accrose the front of them. I have been
reading online about potential causes, and it looks to me like the
real problem is that they are too small for the rooms I am trying to
cool. (I am in a *large* loft space, with several large (2000 sqr
foot) roms). This means that AC is *always* on, and then developes
condencsarion/freezes....

My question is this: Can I plug the Unit into a timer, so that it will
automaticaly power down for an hour every 4 or 5 hours?

While it may be true that the units are not of sufficient capacity for
the space to be cooled, you may be able to improve their performance
by ensuring the air filters are clean, and by backing-off the
temperature control to allow the machine to cycle on and off more
frequently... which would be preferable to using an external timer.
