Question ID: 568122
I am looking for statistic information for Houston, more specifically
Harris County in Houston. I would like to know how many businesses
there are in Harris county split up by Home Office Business, Small
Business, Medium Business, Large Business. Out of these businesses I
need to know how many use computers and require computer consulting.

I also need to know how many households in the middle class to upper
class have computers, or are planning to buy computers in Harris
County.

OPTIONAL but would be a plus - Out of these how many use the services
of independent computer consultants VS large business.

pr2005-ga,

I just wanted to let you know that business stats as fine-grained as
you're seeking are rarely available. I doubt these types of
statistics could be found for a state or the nation as a whole, let
alone an individual county.

You may want to consider loosening up some of the constraints here --
asking your question a bit more broadly -- in order to make it more
likely that you'll receive an answer to your question.

Best of luck...

The following came from the US Census:
http://www.census.gov

The census has separate statistic tables for Businesses Without Paid
Employees and Businesses With Employees.

From the table for Businesses Without Paid Employees:

229,871 establishments in Harris County (in 2001)
This might be considered "Home Office"?

From the table for Business With Employees: (2001)

  No. Employees: 1-9 10-99 100-999 1000+
  No. of Establishments: 59,515 22,934 2,640 116
This might be considered "Small", "Medium", "Large" and "Very Large" businesses.

The Harris County population was 3.4 Million, in 2000.
They live in 1,205,516 Million Housing units.
Of these 559,208 are specified owner-occupied, and 537,565 rented.
12,594 of specified owner-occupied houses are valued over $500K.
57,831 of specified owner-occupied houses are valued: $200-499K.
44,232 of specified renter housing is $1000+/month
These counts might be considered middle/upper classed households.

I hope this helps, even though the data is 4-5 years old.

If you can estimate an average growth year per year (so that I can
have approximate values for 2004-5 I will accept that as an answer.
Great job!

I'm not an official Answerer, I can only make Comments, so the
information I gave is effectively free to you.
I thought your question was interesting (I have family in Harris
county) and I felt the answer could be relatively easily researched
using the Census (at least to give a ball-park estimate) and it seemed
a shame you had not received an official Answer after 4 weeks!

I can tell you in addition, that in 2003, the following business
statistics are available:

  No. Employees: 1-9 10-99 100-999 1000+
  No. of Establishments: 60,088 22,734 2,592 114
                           up 1% down 1% down 2% down 2%

  Non-employing Establishments: 237,137 (up 3%)

Whether these trends continued up to 2005 is anyone's guess for now.
But I think the 2001/2003 numbers are a good "ball-park" basis for
most purposes.

Updated statistics for the population/households are not available.
