MS Word: Printing Outline

Hey, I have a 6 level "outline" in microsoft word that's 75 pages
long. I want to print it just like it looks when I collapse it to the
4th level (about 10 pages long on the screen). When I print it it
always explodes it to the full level of detail. How do I print it
collapsed to the 4th (or any particular) level?

Folks,

First, thanks so much for the input. I can only express my surprise
that it does not appear possible to use MS Word to print the outline
as it appears on the screen. Creating and inserting a 5 - 25 page
"table of contents" each time before printing, and then printing only
those pages enables a partial solution and allows me to limp forward
to a degree that will almost suffice.

Thanks so much for the suggestions, I can only hope that MS upgrades
the functionallity to a more useful level at some point in the future.

Thanks again!

jtg.

johnt01,

If the document is formatted with built-in heading styles (heading
style: Formatting applied to a heading. Microsoft Word has nine
different built-in styles: Heading 1 through Heading 9.), you can
print just the headings. Use the buttons on the Outlining toolbar to
display only what you want to print.

If you formatted the headings with styles other than the built-in
heading styles (heading style: Formatting applied to a heading.
Microsoft Word has nine different built-in styles: Heading 1 through
Heading 9.) (Heading 1 through Heading 9) or outline levels (outline
level: Paragraph formatting you can use to assign a hierarchical level
(Level 1 through Level 9) to paragraphs in your document. For example,
after you assign outline levels, you can work with the document in
outline view or in the Document Map.) (Level 1 through Level 9), you
can print the headings as a table of contents and omit the page
numbers. You need to specify the styles that you used to format the
headings.

Hope this helps. :)

Here is a more detailed answer...

*Create a table of contents by using custom styles*

If you've already applied custom styles to your headings, you can tell
Word which styles to use when it's building the table of contents.

Click where you want to insert the table of contents.

On the Insert menu, click Index and Tables, and then click the Table
of Contents tab.

Click Options.

Under Available styles, find a style you've applied to headings in your document.

Under TOC level, to the right of the style name, enter a number from 1
to 9 to indicate the level you want that heading style to represent.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each heading style you want to include in the
table of contents.

Click OK.

Do one of the following:
To use one of the available designs, click a design in the Formats box.

To design a custom table of contents layout, choose the options you want.
Select any other table of contents options you want.
