Hello misterfine:
Thanks for the interesting question. I've done some very thorough
searching for you and the good news is that the area of magazines
aimed directly at cancer patients/survivors doesn't seem to be very
full.
I was only able to find three printed, actually *mailed* publications
that fit the bill:
Cure
URL: http://www.curetoday.com/
Quote: "CURE: Cancer Updates? Research & Education is a quarterly
magazine that combines the science and humanity of cancer for those
who have to deal with it on a daily basis. CURE provides scientific
information in easy-to-understand language with equally understandable
illustrations. It is published by CURE Media Group, LP."
Heal
URL: http://www.healtoday.com/
Quote: "But when treatment is over, a new life often begins. Being
healed is when the spirit and the soul merge with the physical self
whether cure has occurred or not. In essence, cure is possible without
healing, but healing can happen with or without cure.
And thanks to modern science, many are living years with cancer as a
chronic illness. Others reach remission/cure but often fear
recurrence.
For these issues and myriad others, we bring you HEAL, the magazine
for those who have been diagnosed with cancer?all of them. In each
issue of HEAL, you?ll find?"
I Can
URL: http://www.ican4u.com/
Quote: "i can magazine is a source of information and support for
everyone affected by cancer. It offers practical advice and useful
explanations about cancer and its treatment, written by leading
medical experts.
Each issue features someone talking about their experience of the
disease; and there are contact details for a range of cancer support
groups."
Of course, there are hundreds and hundreds of other health-based
magazines, journals, and newletters that deal with cancer issues on a
regular basis - but no other ones that I could find (in the English
language) that deal exclusively with cancer for patients and
survivors. But, that isn't what you appear to be after.
Additionally, there are online-only sources of information, too
numerous to enumerate. However, I found two that are of an "e-zine"
style and format that might be interesting for you to look at:
Cancer Wise
URL: http://www.cancerwise.org/
Quote: "CancerWise is a monthly electronic publication that contains
information about the latest advancements in cancer treatment and
research, support programs and activities, and cancer prevention tips,
among other cancer news and information. CancerWise is produced by The
University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. M. D. Anderson is
one of the nation?s original three Comprehensive Cancer Centers
designated by the National Cancer Act of 1971 and is one of only 38
such centers today. M. D. Anderson has been ranked among the top two
cancer hospitals in the nation in U.S. News & World Report's
'America's Best Hospitals' survey since the magazine began its annual
survey in 1990."
PSA Rising
URL: http://www.psa-rising.com/
Quote: "PSA Rising is a patient-centered, evidence-based prostate
cancer news source and resource portal. Our mission since 1997 has
been to raise awareness about prostate cancer and encourage action to
alleviate suffering and find a cure.
We choose to do this primarily by delivering reliable news and
information about medical, scientific and social aspects of prostate
cancer survival. Our news magazine format helps remind us that out job
is to help create a patient press. Our free, advertising-supported
service brings visitors breaking news and archived materials about
peer-reviewed medical studies."
Again, there are thousands of online websites offering resources for
cancer patients and survivors - but these were the only ones that were
of a regular magazine-like format that I was able to find.
I hope you are encouraged by the lack of resources I was able to find! :-)
Good luck with your endeavour!
