How does xp pro choose which adapter to use? If I have wireless
802.11g at 54mb, WAN from verizon at 115kb and a hardwired LAN at
100mb, why does it choose the verizon WAN to get web pages? How can I
change the priority so it goes in order of speed (and connection
quality) without manually disabling the ones that I don't want it to use?

Re-install the network connection using the local area network (LAN) if that is
what you are using. Also please note, there is a box (clear) where
you may check it off to let the computer know to ignor any unpluged
devices. This way, the computer will not decide for you, you will
decide for it. Good Luck.

Thanks for your thoughts. This is actually a brand new installation
of XP so I am not sure re-installing is needed. Is there a specific
checkbox that you are referring too? That sounds promising.

In XP, go to Control Panel --> Network and Internet Connections -->
Network Connections (the screen where you see your various network
adapters listed).

Under Advanced Menu --> Advanced Settings you will see the bind order.
Here you can tell it the order to try the various network adapters in
the "Connections" section (assuming more than one has a valid route to
where you are trying to get to).

sometimes changing the binding order does not work, if it doesn't follow this:
boot your computer and make sure all connections are live.
click start - run - in the open box type in "cmd" (without the quotes) click ok
the type "route print" in the black box & hit enter(without the quotes)
cut and paste the results back here and I will tell you the command to
force the order of the connections .

The advanced tab had the change order and that has worked. Many thanks.

Hi,

I had asked pretty much the same question recently on another forum;
here's the discussion thread:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Q_21495284.html

My question was on how the system decided which network to use.

Hope this helps --

Regards,

Todd

Hi Todd,
Could you post the answers that you received to your post. Many
people have the question so making the answer available here would be
helpful.

The website that you ... costs $9.95 per month so all I can see is
your question and that is not helpful.

Thanks,
Peter
