Quick answer needed: which "Autumn" poem was published first, Hood's
or Keats's? I am assuming one was aware of the other. I'd like the
answer to be Hood's (so that Keats's can be read as an answer to it),
but will settle for the truth.

Thank you,

Howdy, Tryx!

This is not the answer you'd hoped for, but it is the truth: Keats's
"To Autumn" was published in 1820. Hood's "Ode: Autumn" was published
in 1827 (six years after Keats's death).

"Harmon lists To Autumn as the most anthologized poem in the English
language. It was written on September 19, 1819, and published the
following year."

Poem of the Week: John Keats (1795-1821) TO AUTUMN
http://www.potw.org/archive/potw279.html

"During the following year, despite ill health and financial problems,
he [John Keats] wrote an astonishing amount of poetry, including `The
Eve of St Agnes', 'La Belle Dame sans Merci', `Ode to a Nightingale'
and `To Autumn'. His second volume of poems appeared in July 1820."

"In 1827 he [Thomas Hood] published a volume of poems strongly
influenced by Keats, The Plea of the Midsummer Fairies."

Thank you, Pink. Beautiful language illuminates our conscious minds,
enriches our unconscious, and ornaments our souls. I will be reading
these poems aloud tonight at a writers' meeting. I'll still read
Hood's first and let Keats answer it, delivering the "Where are the
songs of Spring?" line as if Keats had written it with Hood's
questions in mind, but I'll tell the truth if asked. At least I do
know the right answer, which I had no time to research today.
