I am senior and an accounting major at the University of New Mexico. Currently, I am looking to get into Masters of Accountancy(or MS in Accounting) programs. I have a solid cumulative GPA of 3.33 and a major GPA of 3.6. Also, I guess I did fair on the GMAT with a 560. It just seems like there are a million graduate programs in accounting out there. So my questions are: 1. Could someone please give me some rankings or suggestion on good accounting grad schools to apply to because US News and Business Week only rank the MBA programs and not Masters in Accounting. In addition to a list of quality schools, what are the strategies that must be utilized to submit a STRONG application? 2. I was recently contacted by Ohio State University to apply for their Fellowship, based on my GMAT and GPA profiles and the fact that I am an Asian American. Could somebody also tell me if there are other schools that offer similar financial assistance for their graduate accounting program, preferably based on the above criteria? 3. Finally, if the ideal assistantships exist, what are the deadlines or things of that nature to watch out for? Thanks. |

usnews does rank business program base on speciality, and one of the speciality they rank is accounting, but you have to buy the premium edition to see the complete list. |

Actually I have already bought the premium edition of usnews online, but I thought that the specialties apply only to the MBA CONCENTRATIONS and not Masters in accounting. |

Hello, I think the list is for MBA concentration in accounting, but if the school is good in accounting as part of the MBA program, then the school should also have a good Master program in accounting too. Are you sure you want a Master in accounting instead of a MBA with concentration in accounting? |

I am an accounting major, and I think that the only way to get really prepared to sit for and pass the CPA exam is by doing a Master in Accounting instead of getting an MBA degree. This is so because MBA programs generally offer a little bit of everything (ie: finance, HR, marketing...) and do not concentrate on accounting. And even with an accounting concentration, an MBA would not be as intense as a Macc in terms of getting prepared to sit for the exam. Also, since I am fairly young with no work experience, an MBA is not the best choice for me right now because most schools require at least a couple years of experience to get into an MBA program. And lastly, I have done a little bit of research and found out that some of the top ranked schools (Berkeley, Harvard, Stanford... etc) do not even offer masters in accounting, even though they have a great MBA concentration in accounting and are ranked by US News. |

I am a MBA student myself, and I have no post-BS work experience. For MBA there are core courses like HR, econ, accounting, information system, and marketing, but the rest is pretty much elective, so you can choose all accounting related elective if you like. Some of the Master in accounting program I know of is pretty short, USC only require 30 units to graduate in your case. http://www.marshall.usc.edu/web/LSOAMasters.cfm?doc_id=2216 Did you talk to you advisor to see which degree, MBA in accounting or a Master in accounting would be a better fit for you? |

Thanks for all your posts. Actually, I have already talked to one of my accounting professors, and was told that an MBA by far carries more weight than a masters in accounting does. I agreed with his opinion but, since I am already doing a BBA, it would be redundant for me to take more of the same core classes in order to get my MBA (unless I get to waive some of the classes taken at undergrad level). And like I said, with no work experience, I think it would be generally hard for anyone to get into a top MBA program. I think that a masters of accounting is more of a better fit for me simply because there's less work experience in a typical student (it might lead to easier admissions because having no experience is not counted as a minus). I would certainly consider an MBA in the future, when I have a couple years of experience under my belt. BTW, does an accounting concentration at USC prepare one to sit for the exam? |

I am not sure, since I am in a healthcare MBA program, and know very little about CPA. You could email the school and find out. |
