://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&oi=defmore&q=define:Metronome Invented by Maelzel in 1816, the instrument is used to indicate the exact tempo of a composition. An indication such as MM 60 indicates that the pendulum, with a weight at the bottom, makes 60 beats per minute. A slider is moved up and down the pendulum to decrease and increase the tempo. MM = 80 means that the time value of a quarter note is the equivalent of one pendulum beat when the slider is set at 80. |

Hi Yuvo, Since you posted your question with the subject "music", I expect that you mean this. As the word indicates, a metronome names the tempo it has been set to, ticking on each beat (rather more "tocking" from the actual sound). Musicians use it when practicing to learn the proper tempo for a musical passage. http://www.pianoservice.de/ This German site presents many different types. The wooden pyramid-shaped ones are the tradition clockwork driven instrument that Godairyfree described. These days, of course, there are digital ones that are much smaller. The Wittner Metronom also can sound the standard 440 cycle A-tone for tuning musical instruments. There is even an online metronome (English spelling with final E, German, and probably other European languages, spell the word without the E.) http://www.metronomeonline.com/ Click the "on" square, or click on the A440 square for the tone. If your posting the question under "health" indicates that you want something else, please let us know. Regards, Myoarin |
