Under B 2 on this site for NY State, it appears that collection agents
do NOT need to be registered or bonded.

Norhtland Group Inc seems to have a favorable record with the Better
Business Bureau, some unresolved complaints, but in that business
there will always be those.

Hope this helps, Myoarin

Granted, New York City.

DEBT COLLECTION AGENCY (122)
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dca/html/122.html

"A person or business is a Debt Collection Agency if engaged in
business of which the principal purpose is to collect debts owed
to another person or entity. Any such business, which attempts
to collect debts from consumers located in New York City, must
have a Debt Collection Agency license."

If you do the following search, it paints a far less rosier image
than the Better Business Bureau (BBB) would have you think.

Google search on: "Northland Group" "collection agency" licensed
://www.google.com/search?q=%22Northland+Group%22+%22collection+agency%22+licensed

Whoops! First I forget to add the site, and then it didn't occur to
me that NYC could have regulation with a tighter control than the
State's.
Thanks, Denco, for correcting my mistake.

Hello,
I don't really know where to go for this. This Northland Group keeps
calling our house. They say we have a Macy's/Burdines account and we
don't. We have never had that account. We know for sure due to the
fact that we were surprised when we were denied for a Macy's account
when we have exceptional credit and have every other credit card in
the world.
The person who calls states he is from Northland. He states we have an
over due Macy's account and asks us for our SOCIAL SECURITY number. We
ask him to send us a bill and he never does. He just screamed at my
fiance, "PAY YOUR BILLS." We are wondering if this is some sort of
scam and wonder if anyone else has heard of them.
Thank you,
Jill McCarthy

Jill,
Sorry about your problem. I expect that there is a confusion about a
similar or identical name. I found that since March, all stores are
no operating under the name of "Macy's". My suggestion would be that
you contact the credit dept. and try to clarify with them that you are
not the people on that account and ask them to call off the collection
agent. Here is a site that gives you ways of contacting:

https://www.macys.com/service/credit/contactus/index.ognc

It may be that Macy's has sold the credit claim to the agency and says
that there is nothing they can do, but make a stink and ask to talk to
a supervisor and try to insist that they do something.
If the agency is still bothering you, read the answer to this question
about collection agencies and learn your rights.

I hope this helps. Good luck, Myoarin
