Hi petang,

Thank you for your question.

"Does Botox® Cosmetic remove wrinkles on the face?
Botox Cosmetic does not remove deep wrinkles on the face, rather it
reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Specifically, Botox Cosmetic
smoothes lines caused by frequent muscle movement.

Botox Cosmetic is approved by the United States Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) for the temporary improvement in the appearance
of moderate to severe forehead lines in adults. The effects of Botox
Cosmetic take three to five days to appear. For most people, the
effects usually last three to six months. In general, three or four
treatments per year are usually needed to lessen the appearance of
wrinkles.

What is Botox Cosmetic?
Botox Cosmetic is the brand name for botulinum (pronounced
bot-choo-lin-um) toxin type A. Botulinum toxin type A is a protein
made by a bacterium. This bacterium, Clostridium botulinum, is
sometimes found in improperly sterilized canned foods. When
unintentionally ingested, it can cause food poisoning, paralysis, and
death. However, Botox Cosmetic does not contain the actual bacteria or
its harmful protein; it contains a purified version of the protein.

Is there a difference between Botox Cosmetic and Botox®?
Botox Cosmetic and Botox both contain botulinum toxin type A. Each of
these products are used for different conditions. Botox Cosmetic was
approved by the FDA in April 2002 for the treatment of forehead
(glabellar) lines. Botox was originally approved in 1989 to treat
certain eye muscle disorders. In 2000, Botox was also approved to
treat neck and shoulder tightness (cervical dystonia)."

"How does Botox Cosmetic work?
Botox Cosmetic is injected into the muscles in very small amounts. It
works by blocking the nerves from releasing a chemical that tightens
muscles. When this chemical is blocked, the muscle stays relaxed and
skin creases do not form. As a result, the skin is less likely to form
wrinkles that are caused from facial expressions such as frowning or
squinting.

What are the side effects of using Botox Cosmetic?
During injection, some people experience local numbness, burning,
swelling, and rarely bruising. The more common side effects of Botox
Cosmetic include severe headache and nausea."

"What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
A BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment is a simple, nonsurgical procedure that
smoothes the deep, persistent lines between your brows that develop
over time. One 10-minute treatment -- a few tiny injections -- relaxes
the muscles that cause those lines to form and keeps them relaxed up
to 4 months. BOTOX® Cosmetic has been widely tested. Now it?s approved
by the FDA."

[edit]

"BOTOX® Cosmetic relaxes the overactive muscles whose repeated
contractions cause the lines between your brows to form. So you can
frown, smile, or look surprised -- without the furrows, creases, and
wrinkles."

[edit]

"What exactly is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a natural, purified protein produced by the
Clostridium botulinum bacterium. Very low doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic are
administered via a few tiny injections directly into the overactive
muscles that cause lines to form. BOTOX® Cosmetic works by blocking
the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles. The
effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic are usually confined to the injected
region; it does not travel throughout the body."

[edit]

"Will my lines look worse if I choose not to continue treatments?
No. Your lines gradually revert to their pre-treatment appearance.

How long does BOTOX® Cosmetic last?
BOTOX® Cosmetic lasts up to 4 months."

"How does Botox work?

It is repeated muscle contractions from years of smiles and frowns and
surprises that deepen facial lines. Once Botox is injected, it seeks
and finds just the right nerve endings that cause the contraction and
halts the spark that contracts the muscle by blocking the release of a
neurotransmitter. The nerve is then incapacitated by the Botox until
it starts to awaken again in about 4-6 months. Then another shot of
Botox restarts the process."

"How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?

Those moderate to severe frown lines between your brows form over time
as the result of muscle activity. BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected directly
into the muscles between your brows. It works by blocking the
transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles; this reduces
the activity of the muscles that cause those persistent lines to form.

How long does BOTOX® Cosmetic last?
Results from treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic can last for up to 4
months. If you discontinue treatment, the frown lines between your
brows gradually will look like they did before treatment."

Botox blocks the transmission of acetylcholine from the nerves to the
muscle. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter which send a message to
the muscle telling it to contract or tense up. With the flow of
acetylcholine blocked or significantly reduced, the muscle can no
longer retract and it relaxes. As a result, the wrinkled areas smooth
out and soften.
