I need to find out the best way to repair spalling brick on a chimney
that is only used for a fireplace ( maybe 5 times a year) one story
high, in new england. its happening mostly around the area that near
(above and below the roof line.Any new materials quicker or better
than traditional mortar or tedious rewmoval and replacementy of the
bricks? appearance is not of greatest importance, though I would
rather it all ended up looking like the original. the whole chimney is
painted white.

Perhaps this will be helpful to you:

Brick Problems in Chimneys

"Cutting or chiseling the problem bricks out and replacing them can
repair these conditions. Cost may be $30.00 to $40.00 per brick with
a $300.00 minimum. Placing cement stucco over the problem bricks is
an option, however, this would not be recommended unless the
appearance was not a concern."

Hi
thanks for the response, but that's the info I already found.
Replacing whole bricks seems to me like it would be a very delicate
operation, because ofnot only having to chisel around each brick, but
having to undo the bond from the back of the brick. repeated blows
from a chisel etc seem to me would pose the risk of cracking more
parts of the chimney. Espescially, I wouldn't want to damage anything
further inward than the outside bricks; I thought there may be som
modern epoxy or something that is approved for that
