Question ID: 569645
I am trying to get my laptop to work with my company's network, I
would have to personally pay the IT people to do it but I am keen to
do it myself.
The network is running a NT system as a domain. The IP addresses are
assigned by DHCP and I can obtain a liscence, I know the DNS and WINS
server addresses and can ping them and perform nslookup. What I can't
do is A) browse the shares and B)which is the most important find the
proxy settings as they are automatically assigned.
As for B I have looked for WPAD.dat using DNS and sniffed DHCP data to
see if it is located on option25 but no luck.
Is there a way round this withot administrative rights?
Any suggestions or pointers.....
Thanks

Ok as an member of IT my first point is TELL IT your doing this!!

1) Why you can't get at the shares on your servers at work:
You need to join the computer to the domain and (I hope you already
have this) need a network login
->You CAN NOT join your computer to the domain without a admin
password BECAUSE it would be a HUGE secuity hole if you could. (Think
if someone could just walk in and get anything information on your
shares without the computer being approved by IT)

2) Proxy settings aren't as hard to find, but if there being auto
asigned then it's by your Domain Server which you need to join the
Domain to get at. If you have a computer which is already part of the
domain here how you can find from IE.

Bottom line, if you want I'm sure IT doesn't mind showing you how they
join computers to the domain but their going to have to do it.
