According to John C. Nelson, immediate Past-President of the American
Medical Association, there are 918,000 physicians in the United
States.

936,000 physicians in the United States and its territories.

Also be aware there are a large number of physicians who do not
practice.  For example, mothers with children, either leave practice
or work sharply reduced hours. I believe my son, who is in medical
school now, was told by professors that nearly half of women doctors
are not currently in practice.
