There is a commercial process now available to supply small quantities of matched patterns and pantone colors, say from 1 to 200 yards or metres.. Approx 90% of Pantone colors can be matched. The process is called inkjet dye sublimination. The pattern or color needed is produced in a suitable graphics software program in a suitable panel large enough to cover the area required. Then wide format printers (most common size is 1600mm, as most fabric is produced in widths of approx 1500mm) converted to take liquid dye sublimination inks print the color or pattern onto special receiver paper. This is done via a commercial RIP (raster image processor) to ensure accurate color and reproduction. The paper and the white pure polyester upholstery fabric are placed together and then usually run through a roll heat press. Some heat presses use steam and also flatbed presses are used. This process is only applicable to polyester. There are thousands and thousands of polyester fabrics and substrates now available for this process. This is how 90% of sports clothing world wide is now produced. |
