It can be difficult to find the peripheral veins in which to
cannulate, and the performer has to try more times. Could you find
some statistics of the number of attempts required per successful IV
cannulation? I would especially like to know the rate for adults as I
have found an article from 2003 in "Journal for Infusion Nursing"
about the rate for children (which has set the standard of max 4
attempts for Registered Nurses).

Dear theodor-ga,

I?m not sure whether the below information goes some way towards
answering your question. Have a review of them and perhaps you can
give me some idea if I am going in the right direction. Some medical
material I cannot access as it requires subscription or a password.

I have found two policy documents which set out IV cannulation
procedures for nurses and emergency personnel (no doctors). I cannot
state whether these are examples of general policy in most
hospitals/emergency organisations or are an exception to the rule.

Paramedic Association of Canada
?A maximum of two attempts at intravenous cannulation can be made on
each patient. Further attempts may be made en route, at the discretion
of the medical director or from physician on-line medical control.?

Ulster Community & Hospitals Trust
?A nurse must not puncture the skin more than TWICE whilst attempting
intravenous cannulation.?

A similar policy appears for the Mater Hospital Trust

These reports discuss the use of using agents to ease intravenous
cannulation. They contain various statistics which may assist.

Dear Answerfinder,

I sorry for this late response - thank you very much for your answer -
it goes a long way in answering my question and is sufficient for now.

I was wondering if you could have a look at my last question, which I
have mentioned to you earlier, about the market size for IV
(intravenous catheters). I have found the google answer I mentioned to
you, but it is from 2002 and I would like some more resent figures.

The Google researcher's name was Claudietta and she used search terms like:

catheter market size
intravenous catheter market
IV catheter market size

and she found figures in sources like:
Biomedical Market newsletter
Medical & Healthcare marketplace Guide
Rubber & Plastics News
European Plastics News

It would be really good if you could find some figures on
the market size for IV (intravenous catheters) divided into peripheral
and central catheters.

What I am really after is a figure telling how many cannulations
(inserting the catheter in the vein; peripherally and central) that is
performed worldwide per year.

Best regards

Dear theodor-ga,
Thank you for you response. By way of answer I'll just refer you to the above.

As for your other question, my fellow researcher claudietta-ga has
unfortunately not been active on Google Answers since 2002. I?ve
checked her sources on that question and it is apparent that she had
access to a subscription database where those reports were available.
Perhaps through a university or employer. Unfortunately I do have any
such an access.

For instance, I have found the below report which will contain the
answer but it costs $2195. This may be available through a subscriber
database.

Catheters: Global Markets & Technologies
Published by: Theta Reports
http://www.marketresearch.com/map/prod/962774.html

You will see that you can search inside the report for ?intravenous
catheters? and the market size is given but the dollar amount is
hidden.

I don?t think I assist any further on this. Sorry.

Regards.

Dear Answerfinder,

I have tried to find my way around in the www.marketresearch.com link
you mention, but unfortunately I am not able to find the information
you mention; that I can search in the report for "intravenous
catheters and find the market size (but not the dollar amount)

I would like very much to get the market size (the dollar amount
doesn't matter) Could you help me?

Best regards
Lise

Dear Theodor-ga,
Mmmm, I'm not sure what is happening here. I cannot access it either
now. The market size figure is now blanked out. I can only think they
have changed it so one cannot read it, or I was mistaken for some
reason. If that in case, I apologise for leading you on a wild goose
chase.
