I'm looking to figure out how content providers/broadcaster/affiliates
and cable companies make their money. I know cable companies generally
pay content provider for their shows, but sometimes they just accept
carriage of another of the providers' more unpopular channels. Also, I
know affiliates used to get payments from broadcasters, but my
understanding is this doesnt happen very much anymore, so how do they
make money? Is it advertising inventory sales? Do broadcasters also
own advertising inventory? How about cable companies, do they have ad
time too? I am looking for a diagram showing flow of payments
(including in-kind payments like advertising or carriage) for the TV
industry. Also, if there are exceptions or discrepencies from the
basic scheme (possibly deriving from different relative levels of
power/competitve position) I'd like these outlined/explained. Thanks.
