Question ID: 57101
What is the format for Texas license plates that are being issued now?
 I mean, 3 letters than 3 numbers or 1 letter, 2 numbers, 3 letters
or.... Are there any restrictions on the letters or numbers that can
be used in different positions?
Is this a new format or has it been this way for awhile. If it is
new, what was the old format?
Thanks!

Hi kr44-ga:

The format for Texas license plates currently being issued is L## LLL,
where:

L = letter (but not a vowel),
# = number

For example, V44 TRG or P31 RTF.

This format has been in use since 2000. The previous format:

LLL ##L

was exhausted in 1997.

You can also get Graphic Special-issue Passenger Plates in Texas with
a variety of graphics and personalized letters/numbers.

I could go on, but I won't, because the following site:

History of Texas License Plates
http://www.io.com/~dork/bolthole/texas/pass/history.html

does a *much* better job of explaining these details and the *entire*
historical timeline of changes (complete with pictures). If this site
doesn't tell you what you need to know, I'll eat my Stetson!

If you require any clarification, please ask before you rate this
answer.

Thanks.

Oops - just noticed the error in my own answer, the current L## LLL
format has been in use since 1997, not 2000.

Please excuse my temporary insanity. :-)
