I'm looking for an old children's book. I think the title is The
Bedtime Story. It's told in poem form about how animals sleep. The only
phrase I remember is "with your purr motor going". The cover is blue
and it has a little boy on it. Small book 5" x 6"

Hello.

It sounds like you're describing "Bedtime Story" (1982) by Jim Erskine.

From a description at Amazon.com:

"A child listens to a bedtime story while outside the moon smiles and
the animals engage in their nighttime activities."

A photo at Abebooks.com shows a blue cover:

No it's not the right book. This one was about how animals
sleep...elephants, tigers, cats, birds and the entire story was done
as a poem. Maybe 18 pages or so.

In approximately what year did you first encounter the book?

I had it when my kids were little so I'm thinking maybe 1978-1980?

Could it be "The Time to Sleep Book" (1978)?

8"x8" softback, shaped children's book with full color illustrations.
A Golden Shape Book. Describes in simple words and pictures how
animals sleep.
