Question ID: 571180
I'm looking for an RFID development kit which will allow me to develop
my own code which will run on the RFID tag. The tag should have on the
order of at least 8K of ROM, 256 bytes of RAM, and ideally have some
(256 bytes or more) non-volatile RAM, although this isn't essential.

The form factor of the tag must be small: keyfob size or similar.

Here are two common manufacturers and their info pages:

I contacted the maunfacturer for a personal project a few weeks back
and they replied with the prices and uses of their development kits.
The email I recieved is as follows:

Thanks for your interest in SkyeTek and our products.

To begin working with our OEM modules and embedded software products,
SkyeTek offers three developer kits ? two for HF (13.56MHz) RFID
technology and another for UHF (900MHz) technology ? I have included
information for the HF kits here as I believe this to be the most
relevant. The developer kits include hardware, tech support and
software libraries designed to bring your product to market quickly
and efficiently by decreasing your implementation time and effort.

The M1 HF developer?s kit includes four M1 RFID read/write modules, an
EA1 External Antenna module, one 5V power supply, RS 232 Cable and
Connector, and four mounting hardware sets, 30 Sample RFID Tags and
Smart Labels, Demo Software, Drivers and Software Libraries, Source
Code in VB, C++ and Java and Technical support. The kit cost is $1499
USD plus shipping/handling and should provide an OEM integration team
everything needed to bring RFID to your product line. Additional M1?s
are $114 USD.

The M1-mini HF developer?s kit includes one M1 RFID read/write module,
three M1-mini RFID read/write modules, an EA1 External Antenna module,
one 5V power supply, RS 232 Cable and Connector, and one mounting
hardware set, 30 Sample RFID Tags and Smart Labels, Demo Software,
Drivers and Software Libraries, Source Code in VB, C++ and Java and
Technical support. Like the DKM1, this kit cost is $1499 USD plus
shipping/handling. Additional M1-mini?s are $141 USD.

If you go to http://www.skyetek.com/demokit_DKM1.html and click on the
"Buy Now" button, a login window will pop up. Enter "skye01" as the
code and you will enter our shopping cart page. Scroll down to the
DKM1 and add to your cart. Repeat this process for any additional
products you are interested in ordering and proceed to checkout. You
can by pass the Account Creation set by clicking on ?place order
without account?. We should ship product in ~7-10 days ARO according
to your shipping request on the order form. If you are interested in
purchasing the M1-mini DK, please simply order the DKM1 as described
above and then send me an email requesting the M1-mini version ? I
apologize for the inconvenience, we will be updating the shopping cart
to include this kit in the near future.

To provide the best service to our customers, SkyeTek tries to
understand clearly the solutions our customers are using our products
to create. I know you are very busy, but if you could take moment to
provide a brief description of your application and its primary
challenges - including timeline and anticipated volume requirements,
it would help prepare us to support your efforts most efficiently.

Again, please let me know if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Brian

The above company only makes readers/writers and dev kits. You would
have to purchase tags from a seperate company.

Another company that makes Rfid tags and dev kits is Texas
Instruments, the manufaturer of the popular TI-84 Plus Graphing
Calculators. Their Rfid solution can be found at
(http://www.ti.com/rfid/). They sell both tags and evaluation kits
(http://www.ti.com/rfid/docs/products/evalKits/evalKits.shtml) , the
kits costing from $245.00 to &595.00.

Finally, you can get Rfid tags in printable labels from ().

I hope this answers your question. Please contact me if you have and
more questions.

Oops! I forgot to add the printable label manufacturer. It is
http://www.affordablerfid.com/. They sell rolls of Rfid tags. Most
Rfid tags only have enough memory to hold an id number which
references a row in a database. If you want to write programs for a
chip, you would need something else, not an Rfid chip.

Thanks very much for the text and links, but I need a kit that will
let me do tag-side development, not just reader-side. So I definitely
need an active or passive tag with a microcontroller I can program.
