I have a painting that my grandfather gave me and I'd like to find out who painted it. I can't make out the signature -- it looks to be in either Greek or Cyrillic letters -- so I can't Google the artist or try to find him/her on eBay. The painting is a modern oil of a wharf or a pier and a cityscape. You can see a picture of it here: http://homepage.mac.com/bengott/.Pictures/Gott%20Painting.jpg I have taken a close-up picture of the signature, which I have enhanced; that is viewable here: http://homepage.mac.com/bengott/.Pictures/Gott%20Painting%20Signature.jpg Any and all help would be appreciated! I'd like to get this mystery solved! |

I think it's very cool, too, which is why I want to find out who painted it! It's a definite mystery -- although I hope that someone will be able to help me and figure it out! |

Hi!The name is Greek and its P. Zografos. Zografos in Greek means painter so I guess it was his artistic name.I m taking a wild guess that P stands for Panos or Panagiotis. I did a bit of a research on the name Panagiwths Zografos and eventually was one with that name. You?ll find some infos about him in here http://www.mlahanas.de/Greeks/Arts/Arts.htm and you can see his artistic style here http://grecja.home.pl/malarstwo/mal_zografos.htm .Though I m not sure at all if that?s him because the painting seems contemporary and he lived in the 19th century..But the name is for sure Zografos (????????).If you can give me more details about the era the painting was created i might be able to help you a bit more. Danae, Thank you so much for your comment! I really appreciate your translation of the Greek... I'm not sure of the era of the painting, but I agree with you that the style of the painter you mentioned didn't really match. This is, however, a starting point... I'm going to call my father tonight to see if he remembers anything about the painting. My grandfather was the C.E.O. the American Manufacturing Corporation (AMF) in the 1960's and 1970's, and he travelled frequently. Perhaps this painting came from one of those visits? I'll post more later... |

Style influenced by cubism? Here is a paper about Greek art that covers the period. Panos Zografos's style is quite different. Could the artist have just used his initial "P" with the word for artist - or been so devious as to ride on PZ's coattails? http://www.bankofgreece.gr/en/bank/Exhibition_Vlachos.htm At the end of this site, there is a list of galleries that might be able to add some insight: http://www.mlahanas.de/Greeks/NewArts/Arts.htm |

Actually, I don't think the initial is a P at all. It looks like an O, which would be unlikely, as very few Greek baptismal names begin with O; possibly a theta without the central bar, which is also unlikely; or, which is my guess, just an ornamental flourish on the initial Z of Zografos - which doesn't, unfortunately, help very much... |
