I need to know where I can get thick oak boards (1 1/4" x 12") to finish off some bookcases that I've made. I need them to withstand big heavy books. Most standard lumber suppliers do not carry that thickness. I know I can get them custom milled , but that would cost a fortune. Any suggestions? |

Seems like a waste of good wood to me. Why not laminate 3/4" oak plywood to make 1-1/2" then face with solid oak? |

I'm not sure where you live, but look in the yellow pages under "Sawmills" - you would be surprised how reasonable it might be. The suggestion about laminating plywood is also a good one. If you can find an old fashioned lumberyard (not one of the big boxes) they should have 5/4 (surfaced to 1-1/16")oak in random widths and random lengths. Remember, what makes wood warp is moisture - be sure you seal all your surfaces with whatever product you use to finish (oil, polyurethane, etc.) Good Luck! |
