The least expensive way to do the tests (except for your time) is to
carry out classical "wet" chemical analysis on a semi-micro scale. But
to do this safely (strong acids and alkalis, and small amounts of
toxic gases are involved) and competently (so that you will be able to
get good answers with your experiments) you probably should take a
semester of college chemistry with an associated qualitative inorganic
analysis laboratory portion.
