Question ID: 57167
i need a computer hard drive. It *needs to be supplied to the UK*. I
have checked a couple of US shops and had a hard time getting them to
understand me. The details can be found at the link:
http://www.maxtor.com/maxtorhome.htm?Quantum/support/hdd/atlas_10k_sca_scsi_support.htm
Please check out the technical specification - since of course there
are many similar drives. The one I need is the 18.2GB version, it has
a 5.0ms average read time, along with the specs stated. Model number:
QM318200TN-SCA Actually, and of the other Atlas 10K would be at least
slightly interesting. (see
http://www.maxtor.com/maxtorhome.htm?Quantum/support/hdd/atlas_10k_sca_scsi_support.htm)

I found a place to buy a ATLAS 10k III Hard Disk on line in UK, it is
very similar to the one that are you looking for:
Storage Capacity: 18.4GB to 73.4GB
Average Seek Time: 4.5 ms
Rotational Speed: 10,000 RPM
Interface Options: U320 and U160. Backwards compatible to Ultra2,
Ultra SCSI. In 68-pin wide and 80-pin SCA-2.

This is the third generation of Atlas 10k hard drives.

Do you accept this as an answer?

No - this is the wrong drive - a newer one in fact - the reason I need
the Atlas 10K is because I have broken the circuit board on my one and
wish to replace that by buying a new drive - but you can imagine that
they have to be pretty much identical. the size doesn't need to be
identical, apparently - this is more of a wish. The message below is
what I received from Maxtor:
------------------------------------------------------
To replace the circuit board on a Quantum drive you need to have an
almost
identical drive. Example GTLA or P/N ZZ10ayyz-xx-x. ZZ and z have to
be
the same as the original drive, otherwise it is definitly not possible
to
replace the circuit board. It would also be good to have the same
revision
(xx-x) but not absolutely necessary.

To replace the circuit board on Maxtor drives the drives need to have
the
same PCBA uplevel number and need to be from the same drive family.

Please be aware that the warranty (if still valid) will be voided if
you
replace the circuit board.

If you are interested in recovering data from your hard drive we can
provide
you with details of several companies who do offer this service.

...

Kind Regards,

Hi davepies

As my knowledge of SCSI drives isn't as deep as I'd like it to be, I
thought I'd pop this in as a clarification rather than an answer.

At http://www.squire.co.uk/acatalog/Squire_co_uk_Quantum_SCSI_111.html#a892
they have a product listed as follows:

QUANTUM ULTRA II LVD SCSI HARD DISK DRIVE: 10K-18G
ATLAS 10K 18.4 GB ULTRA II SCSI HARD DISK DRIVE
(68 PINS / 160 MB/SEC / 10K RPM / 8MB CACHE)
Price: £182.85 (Excluding: VAT)

Does this sound like it might be the drive you're after? It's one of
the very few I found which aren't Atlas II, Atlas III or Atlas V
series.

I appreciate your efforts - though this is unlikely to work.

The reason is that this drive is 68pins (standard SCSI - not the SCA
80 pin connector), it's also a different series altogether. I need
the same one for the reaons described above. I also posted the wrong
URL before describing all the different Quantum drives: see
http://216.239.39.100/search?q=cache:imOzO90rB0YC:www.baber.com/drives/internal_hard_drives/scsi/quantum_scsi_discontinued.htm+QM318200TN-SCA&hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8

The message I appended before described that it needs to be the same
series, though if it's 9GB of 36 GB it doesn't really matter (much).
I also don't mind buying it from the USA (much easier to find I
imagine) so long as they will supply it. Money order is fine. I only
need the drive for the circuit board on it - bit of a waste I suppose.

Hello there David,

I've tracked down the hard disc that you're looking for - a Maxtor
Atlas 10K, 18.2GB, model number QM318200TN-SCA. To do this, I searched
directly for the model number in Google, but originally came up with
several very out-of-date results. This is a discontinued drive, so to
separate out the 'real' results I emailed every company claiming to
still have one of these drives.

The SunStar Company of Inglewood, California have one of these drives
in stock. To quote from the email sent to me by Patty Lubin
(PATTY.LUBIN@SUNSTARCO.COM):
"Dear Stuart: Thanks for your inquiry. I do have a Quantum
QM318200TN-SCA.
It is refurbished with a 90 day warranty. Price is $140 USD. I need
to
know where in the UK this would be shipped so that I can get a Fed Ex
freight quote for you."

At the time of writing, 140USD is approximately 92GBP.

I have let Patty know that this was an enquiry on behalf of someone
else, so I would advise you to send her an email to arrange delivery
and payment details. Alternatively the company can be reached by
telephone on 00 1 310 330 2900 (note that Inglewood time is eight
hours behind the UK).

For confirmation, the drive in question is listed on this page:
http://www.sunstarco.com/Hard%20Drive%20Inf/Maxtor/Maxtor-Conner%20Drives.htm

You will see on this page, as well as...
http://www.sunstarco.com/Hard%20Drive%20Inf/Maxtor/maxtor.htm
and
http://www.sunstarco.com/Hard%20Drive%20Inf/Maxtor/maxtor_2.htm
... that the SunStar company also have a number of other similar
drives. As you mention that you only actually need the circuit board,
it may be that another drive will prove to be cheaper. Alternatively,
it may of course be that the SunStar company can supply you with the
circuit board separately - it may be worth asking Patty this when you
make contact with her.

I hope this answers your question to your satisfaction - I agree with
you that this drive was tricky to track down!

Best wishes,
