Where did Eleanor & Franklin D. Roosevelt live in 1918? A relative, Ferdinand Vingiprova, was a chauffeur. His WWI draft card shows he was employed by a Mrs. F. Roosevelt at 830 Park Ave, New York City. Could this have been Eleanor? |

Hello. Eleanor & FDR's 1918 New York City address was 49 East 65th Street. sources: " In 1908, they moved into the 49 E 65th Street townhouse (adjoining Sara's home at 47 East 65th Street) SDR had built for the couple as a Christmas present. This remained the Roosevelt base in New York City until SDR's death in 1941. FDR then sold the house to Hunter College." source: The National Park Service: Where Did Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt live? http://www.nps.gov/elro/who-is-er/q-and-a/q10.htm "In 1908, they moved into the 49 East 65th Street townhouse... ...The Manhattan townhouse where newlyweds Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt lived from 1908 until 1933." source: New York City Architecture http://www.nyc-architecture.com/UES/UES035.htm "The Manhattan townhouse where newlyweds Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt lived from 1908 until 1933 will become a public-policy institute, the City University of New York announced last month." source: NationalTrust.org http://www.nationaltrust.org/magazine/archives/arc_news/040903.htm " Franklin D. Roosevelt He and Eleanor lived at 125 E. 36th from 1905-1908 and then at 47 E. 65th." source: Manhattan User's Guide http://www.manhattanusersguide.com/archives_content.php?contentID=062804&category=info ---------- strategy: "franklin d roosevelt" lived manhattan "49 east 65th" roosevelt I realize that this address probably isn't the one that you wanted to hear, but, as indicated above, 49 east 65th Street was clearly the Roosevelts' Manhattan address during the relevant period. Thank you. |

Hi, Your relative would have been employed by Mary Loney Roosevelt. She was the widow of Frederick Roosevelt, a second cousin of President Theodore Roosevelt, who died in 1916. Mary Loney Roosevelt is listed in the 1920 and 1930 census records at 830 Park Avenue and died at this address after a long illness according to her NY Times obit of March 12, 1936. |

Perhaps Eleanor should have had a professional driver. My mother lived near the Roosevelts' Hyde Park, NY (upstate from NYC) residence from the 1930s through the 1960s. It was well known in the area that Eleanor was a terrible driver and was involved in many fender benders. The advice was that if you saw her driving, you should get out of the way. |
