Most frequently variance analyses are related to sales activities. 
I'd recommend the following Google search strategy and think that the
first one in my results (Prentiss-Hall) is very good:
"variance analysis" sales .ppt

Using a file name (.ppt or .xls) is a great way to use Google to hone
in on specific information.  It's especially helpful with "market
research" and "sales forecast" type of data -- sometimes even turning
up what appear to be proprietary Excel spreadsheets.
