I am interested in finding a word for acronyms that sound or spell
somewhat like they mean. An example is ASH - Action against Smoking
in Health. ASH is an anti-smoking organisation in Australia.
I have created an acronym POOA standing for Prisoners Of Old Age.
Working in an Aged Care facility, I care for many wonderful aged and
infirm individuals who occasionally experience episodes of faecal
incontinence - they 'poo' themselves. Many of the residents are
trapped in a nursing home, not so much against their will, but because
there is no other facility that caters for their care. So they are
prisoners of old age. I would imagine the plural of POOA would sound
like poo-ers, which sounds like some one who poos.
Is there a word that describes acronyms that describe what they do?
The closest I can come to is onomatopoeic acronym
