I need to transfer certain information from my PC to my newly acquired
laptop that are connected by wireless. I have the same email address
for both
computers. An email always goes to the one that is open and in use or
to the unit that is first opened if both are offline. The only way I
am able to transfer an email from one to the other is to forward and
quickly turn off the one I am sending from. There has to be a better
way. Also, I would like to transfer certain stored info such as email
addresses, favorite website addresses, picture folders and/or other
folders from one unit to the other. Can this be done without an
interconnecting cable? Either way (with or without cable connection)
how is it accomplished? My system is Windows XP home. I have plenty of
capacity and speed to accomplish almost anything. I will be away for
the next four days, so it will be next weekend before I will be able
to reply. Thanks, Bob.

In addition to crythias-ga's suggestion to leave copies of emails
on the server for as many days as you need to, as a way of managing
your email more easily, the simplest way to connect any 2 computers
and transfer files back and forth is with a USB Data Transfer Cable,
using the PC-Linq software that comes with some of them.

Here's a good example of such a cable, from the PCTek Online
Yahoo store, and it's on sale for only $17:
http://store.yahoo.com/pctekonline/gwcuchiusb20.html

This cable and the PC-Linq software that comes with it will
work on all versions of Windows and both 1.1 and 2.0 versions
of USB.

It comes with a CD with the PC-Linq software on it. You just
install the PC-Linq software on both machines, plug the cable
in between them, start PC-Linq on both machines and the PC-Linq
File Manager will appear on both screens and detect both the
local and the remote computers. You can then use it very much
like Windows Explorer to copy, cut, paste or drag-and-drop
files and folders from one machine to the other. Easy!

I noticed that, on one of your earlier questions, you said
you have Windows 98 on one of your machines. If one of the
machines has Windows 98 on it, you'll need to reboot the
machine after connecting the cable. With Windows XP, it's
strictly plug-and-play.

Here's a PDF version of a User's Manual for the PC-Linq
software on bafo.com:
http://www.bafo.com/donload/Manual/BF-100C%20v1.0/USB%20FILE%20TRANSFER%20CABLE%20User's%20Manual%20_English_.pdf

Note that there are other USB Data Transfer Cables out there
which don't come with PC-Linq software. They come with drivers
for Windows that require you to set up Windows Networking with
NetBEUI. They are no less expensive than the one above, and
don't have the utter simplicity offered by the use of PC-Linq.
Also, some are compatible with only one version of USB, either
1.1 or 2.0.

Here's a Froogle search for "USB Data Transfer Cables", but I
don't think you can do much better than the one I cited:

I just noticed that the apostrophe in "User's Manual" in the
link I provided for the PC-Linq Users Manual broke the link
and made it incomplete. The link is correct as typed, but not
as linked, so you'll have to copy and paste the link into
your browser's address bar to open it.

Bear with me. I have purchased the cable and software, but have not
had a chance to even open it. Things will be a little slower for me
in couple of days. Thanks, BH

BH...

No worries. I think you'll find it astonishingly easy to set up
and use. I'm looking forward to a report of your success.

I'd also suggest that you simply share your directories over your existing network.

I goofed. I mistook the "PC-Ling" software to be a type and not a
brand. I bought Intellimover Transfer with "P-C Link" software and
cable. The user manual was 110 pages and not simple. I then reread
your advice and realized you meant a specific brand and not a general
reference to a link software. Best Buy, Office Depot, etc. do not
handle P-C Linq so I have ordered it from Yahoo Store per your
original request. I will get a refund on what I bought. Never being
at home to have time to get my laptop and PC together, combined with
my being careless in reading your comments, is not a fair reason to
delay approval of payment to you so I will take care of that now. I
am sure your suggestion will be fine. Bob.
