I would like to create a simple access table which determines the territory
by zipcode range. There are 3 territories in Indiana - north, south,
and Marion. Basically, anything south of I-70 is in the south, and
anything north of I-70 is in the north - except for Marion County
which stands by itself.

The table should just be a 3 digit Zipcode and a territory code (N, S, M).

beaconmj-ga,

I can direct you to an online map of Indiana that shows the outlines
of 3-digit zip codes in the state -- 462 for the Indianapolis area,
and 19 other 3-digit zips covering the rest of the state.

The map DOES NOT show roads or other features. But it is clear that a
number of the 3-digit zips would be double-listed -- that is, they
straddle areas both north and south of I-70.

Would the map meet your needs? Or do you definitely want an answer in
table format?

Let me know.

I definetly want a table like the one described. I've been to several
of the map sites, and wondered if there were a data-related way to do
the project. For the areas that might fall partly in both territories
we'd want to have some way to justify the decision, like determining
whether the zip code centroids (based on lat-long coordinates) fall
above or below the interstate line. Or maybe a large city population
on one "end" of the SCF area would argue for it to go to one territory
or another.

I hope the table formats properly, as they don't always survive the
process of posting to the answer board!

In looking over the three-digit zips, the characterizations (N, S,
Marion) turned out to be clear cut, due to the presence of a sizable
population center in one area or another, as reflected in the Post
Office names for each 3-digit area.
