Question ID: 573805
I have a Thai cook who speaks little English and cannot read English
recipes! I want her to cook English food and I can't cook. Are there
any cookery books in Thai language which have English, American,
french or Italian cooking recipes that she can understand written in
her own language?

Learn to love Thai cooking, :-) or find someone to teach her the
necessary vocabulary for understanding English recipes. Recipes have a
rather limited vocabulary (no complaint about English cooking), and a
cook would soon learn the different words for ingredients and the
standard verbs.

You could try asking Pim at http://chezpim.typepad.com/ (and her email
address is on the page too) - though she might not be very impressed
that you don't want to eat Thai... I don't really agree with myoarin
because the techniques and ingredients of Thai cooking are so
different from European that if you only have experience of the one it
would be difficult to learn the other just from a book, I should
think. Do you live in Thailand and have access to Thai speakers? If
so, list a few things you'd like to eat and I'll send you recipes in
English with an eye to someone being able to translate them. I'm not
a researcher, just someone interested in cooking and with a bit of
spare time.

14 year old daughter!!. Will contact Pim that is helpful advice.

Brian,
Sorry to hear about your situation. But you live in London, where
anything can be found - except, maybe, a Thai language cookery book
for English food.
Nonetheless, there may be such now in Thailand - all those western
hotels. But how to find it? Or how to find a Thai cook in London who
could help you? Either with a source for the book, or by teaching
your cook, whereby I respect Jago's comment. Or, maybe, there is an
English person who speaks Thai, and has a modicom of cooking skills,
who could help.
You might try asking the Foreign Office even.

But to find? Is there a Thai language newspaper in London?
Is your cook willing to try English cooking? Willing to learn from
someone who can't speak the language but only show her the procedures?

Well enough, more questions than answers, Myoarin

Brian,
Another thought: what about contacting one of the big hotels in
Bangkok that also serve western food and ask them if they know of a
book.
Here is the site for the cooking school (for Thai food) at the
Oriental, and there are links to a couple of other hotels.
It can't hurt to ask.

Good luck, Myoarin

Another possibility is to use a translation service. If you google
"Thai translation services" there are masses to choose from. You
could just do a couple of recipes as a test case to see how your cook
does following them. The offer still stands to write you an English
version. Alternatively I could suggest a cookery book. But you would
need to tell me what food you fancy.

You could also try emailing these guys http://thai-uk.org/ - at least
they could maybe read some websites in Thai for you.

Myoarin and I are very worried about your diet....
