As shown on the website indicated below there is a picture on the wall
in back of the man and 2 children. It is not a very clear depiction I
realize but I thought I would put it out there to see if anyone
recognizes the painting's artist. I have always assumed it was by a
Dutch painter because of the black and white tile floor but have been
unsuccessful in finding it in the collection of any of the well know
Dutch artists such as Vermeer.

This picture hung in my family's house during my sisters and my
childhood. My mother gave it to our brother and at some point many
years ago he "misplaced it"

The painting (print) seems to be in a rather large room with pictures
high on the walls along with the windows, a man in the next room
(library?) seen through the door and a lady at either a desk or piano
with, as I recall a yellow dress (?) I think what looks like the
number 4 on the back of the room is actually a mirror with the reverse
image of the pattern in the black and white tile floor. Judging by
the grandeur of the room and clothing it appears to be the home of a
wealthy family.
Thank you

Dear lainey55,

The print in the background of the photograph is a reprocuction of "A
Woman reading a Letter and a Woman sweeping", an interior scene by
Dutch painter Pieter Janssens Elinga (born 1623, died before 1682).

You can see the painting and learn more about the artist on this website [1]:

I was able to identify the artist and the painting because the
depicted room appeared familiar to me. I remembered that the same room
was the setting for several Dutch interior scenes from the 17th
century. So I did image searches until I found one picture that showed
that room in another painting. Once I had found that painting, I knew
the artist's name. Then I searched using his name until I found an
image of the painting that can be seen in your photograph.

Hope this answers your question!
Regards,
Scriptor
