In june 2004 I had a lapband proceedure on a thursday. Due to swelling
in my stomac tube I was keeped ifor the weekend. With instruction from
nurses I went for a walk 4 am on monday morning. On getting back into
bed I felt something let go and felt sever pain in my back.I informed
the nurse of this. Because I was due to be realised on monday no obs
were taken after 6 am 430 pm my doctor stood at the door and told me
to go home even though I had been in sev er pain all day.after my
dauther question nurses on my shallow breathing she was told to take
me home.By tuesday pm I was breathing very shallow, we called our
local doctor who due to comitments could not come till 10 pm , not
knowing how my proceeder was done he treated me thinking I may have a
small clot & told my wife to ring him first up in the morning.830 am
next morning I was worse , she rang he told her to ring the ambalance
& he would ring the hospital were the op was done. At 11 am when the
ambalance came they spoke to my doctor and told him I was in full
organ close down & would not make to that hospital. After Identerfing
I had sever spris infection & stabilized me I was sent to the orginal
hosp for a Icu Bed. By this time I had less than 3% of my lungs & used
to normal ambalances worth of oxegen in 30 KM with 2 paramatics &
doctor & nurse as they did not belive I would Like the trip. On
arriving at the hospital I went into a coma for 2-3 weeks in which
time I had 2 key hole & 2 open surgeries a temp of 41.8 c .Now after
15 month I still requier a hernia op and still have other
complications. My question why dose any site in the world refer to
this risk I was told only of normal complications from surgery, the
risk of lap band slipping ora hernia forming leding to the
removal.Should any body in the medical profession of thought a tearing
sansation & instant pain be investergated prior to releasing me & if
so can the serverity of my condition at 1130 am 2 days after prove
this was related to the tear felling & if so is this clear medical
negligance . If so why have my family & I been through so much pain (
when they were told 3 times I Might Die )why then am I out of pocket
of loss of income & assetswhy do I now need to pay $6000.00 AUS to get
a report of a doctor who may cover up for another doctor before I can
be told if I can get compansation or lose everthings & still risk
complications from another op

What country are you in? If you're in Australia, (you mentioned
AUS$6000) it will help a researcher if you identify the state and city
you're in so that they can ensure the information is relevant to the
medical standards/authorities and laws of that region.

I've also found this website: http://www.laparoscopicsurgery.net.au/lapband.html
which does mention the following "Disadvantages

    * Easy to cheat ?. if chocolates or sweets taken.
    * Mechanical problems:
          o prolapse
          o pouch dilatation
          o food bolus obstruction
o slippage of the stomach through the band erosion
o infection of the band or port leak
          o Revision rate ? 5 -10%
..."

Hello, me again. Have a look at this site:
www.core.monash.org/assets/documents/lapband-results-700-patients.pdf
It's a very interesting report of lapband surgeries and you might find it helpful.
