IS ultra suede really washable? We are thinking of using ultra suede
on our dinning room chairs in a light color and I am wondering how
well can I remove ball point pen marks in case the kids decide to use
it as a drawing board?

Hello Remodel_queen,

As you can see below, whether or not ultrasuede can be washed,
depends on the kind/brand of ultrasuede, dyes used, other fabrics used
such as linings, and of which material the fabric is made. The
Ultrasuede brand, as are most ultrasuede fabrics are made of a
nonwoven 100% polyester ultra-microfiber with non-fibrous polyurethane
binders.

If you are having your chair covers made, or making them yourself,
buy a small swatch first, and give it the ?ink? test at home! I don't
think washing ultrasuede in the typical manner will remove ink stains
anyway, but will require special cleaning techniques, using alcohol,
or using one of a number of stain removal products. From my
research, ultrasuede appears to be a very durable, stain resistant,
and washable fabric! If your budget allows, try to purchase the REAL
Ultrasuede, and not a low priced imitation, for the best performance.

?It is very important to treat/ wash your new fabrics exactly as you
plan to treat/wash them after the garment or home décor item is made.
Even dry cleaning can produce some shrinkage. We recommend you test a
4?? x 4?? square of your new fabric if you are at all unsure how it
will react to your chosen laundering method. If you always test the
same sized square, you will be able to check the percentage of
shrinkage.?

From the makers of Ultrasuede:

?"Carefree Instructions" might be a better way to put it. One of the
things consumers and designers alike appreciate most about Ultrasuede®
is how easy it is to keep looking beautiful?and feeling soft and
plush?for years to come.?

?Ultrasuede® is designed to be machine-washable. However, it is often
combined with materials (for lining and the like) that don't stand up
to a washing machine. So be sure to check the manufacturer's care
instructions first.

All Ultrasuede® fabrics can be dry-cleaned except for one shade of
clear white used for some garments. Again, check your manufacturer's
care instructions for details.

Stain Removal

From red wine to black coffee, most stains can be ringlessly
spot-cleaned with just a touch of mild soap and water. Tougher stains
may require a mild cleaning fluid, which you can purchase at most
hardware and drug stores.?

?With this in mind, we are proud to offer Ultrasuede® to complement
our leather selection. Ultrasuede® is very resistant to staining and
fading, and is extremely durable. Best of all, Ultrasuede® comes in
over 90 colors! Ultrasuede® is a non-woven microfiber, meaning it will
not pull or wear like other upholstery fabrics. It is widely used in
the European luxury automotive industry due to its superior fade
resistance and cleanability. All microfibers are not the same.
Ultrasuede® is the only microfiber to have a limited 10 year
warranty.?

Ultrasuede + washable
Cleaning ultrasuede

Clarification of Answer by crabcakes-ga on 29 Sep 2005 10:07 PDT
Hello again,

I found this slow-loading stain removal chart. However, they offer
no ink stain remover. I'm afraid ink stains may be a problem, even on
ultrasuede! Try ink on your swatch and clean it, using alcohol with a
clean, white, absorbent cloth. Other than that, hide the inkpens!

Regards, Crabcakes
