Dear Google:

I am the editor of a magazine. Would you please find the industry
standard book(s) (or other resources) on how to run a critically
acclaimed national/international magazine. The book(s) should address
how to determine the demographics of your readership, how to hire
staff writers and contributors, and the list goes on. Ideally, the
book(s) should have a view towards creating a high caliber magazine,
such as GQ or The New Yorker--not a mere local publication. The
book(s) should also cover the editing process, layout, etc. If there
is no industry standard book on this topic, then any and all other
resources (including websites) would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Mark Lindsay

Most of these not pitched exactly at your need, but some titles of
interest are listed below.

There seem to be a few copies left in warehouses in Australia of one
education standard title, "Magazine Publishing" by Sammye Johnson and
Patricia Prijatel (2000). See the publisher web site for more details:
http://www.mcgraw-hill.com.au/html/titleDetail.jsp?isbn=0844233560.html

For an Australian online bookstore that could supply this title see:
http://www.winedivabooks.com.au/featuredbook1.asp?StoreUrl=winediva&bookid=0844233560

The same online shop also stocks:

"Magazine Editing: How to Develop and Manage a Successful Publication"
by John Morrish
This is the publisher's blurb for Morrish: "Magazine Editing explains
the job of the magazine editor. John Morrish considers the role of the
editor both as a journalist, having to provide information and
entertainment for readers, and as a manager, expected to lead and
supervise successfully the development of a magazine or periodical.
This fully revised and updated edition begins by looking at the
current state of the magazine market and explains how this has
developed and changed in recent years. Featuring case studies,
examples of covers and spreads and useful tables and graphs, the book
moves on to discuss the editor's many roles and details the skills
needed to run a publication: knowing the reader, building an editorial
team; using words, pictures and design; managing production;
responsible and ethical management. Written by an experienced editor
and writer, Magazine Editing offers practical guidance on:
*How to create an editorial strategy
*How to lead and manage an editorial team
*Researching a market and finding new readers
*Dealing with budgets and finance
*Legal, technological and ethical dilemmas
*How to become an editor"

Other titles listed on the same site are:

"How to Start a Magazine and Publish it Profitably"

and there is a new edition coming out in October of "The Magazine's
Handbook" by Jenny McKay
http://www.winedivabooks.com.au/featuredbook1.asp?StoreUrl=winediva&bookid=0415384265
Blurb: "The Magazines Handbook is a comprehensive introduction to the
magazine industry. It traces the development of magazine publishing
and explores the business of magazines and the role of the magazine
journalist. Using examples from consumer magazines, trade journals,
periodicals and specialist publications, Jenny McKay discusses the key
jobs in the industry from sub-editor to fashion assistant and
journalist through to publisher. The Magazines Handbook outlines the
specialist skills involved in magazine journalism including
commissioning, writing news, researching, interviewing, production and
sub-editing. Specialist chapters discuss electronic publishing and
on-line journalism, magazine design, photography and picture editing
and the legal framework in which magazine publishers have to operate.
The Magazines Handbook includes: * Interviews with magazines
journalists, editors, picture researchers and publishers * Advice on
starting out and freelancing in the magazine industry * An analysis of
'new journalism' and reportage * A glossary of key terms and
specialist concepts * Information on contacts, courses and
professional training."

Amazon UK also has
"The Magazine from Cover to Cover" by Sammye Johnson and Patricia
Prijatel - this is an historical account of magazine publishing.

As the author of "Magazine Editing", mentioned above, I would humbly
suggest that my book will at least point you in the right direction.
The only thing to remember, if you are outside the UK, is that some of
the specifics are aimed at a British audience. On the other hand,
magazine practice around the world seems increasingly to be
converging.

I wish you every success in your efforts.
