Dear claudie45-ga,

There is a National Sate of Emergency currently in force in Sri Lanka.
This follows the assassination of the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister
Lakshman Kadirgamar on 12 August 2005. The state of emergency gives
the government, army and police special powers to detain suspects and
deploy troops if need be to deal with any situation which they view as
terrorism, civil unrest or anti-government actions. This includes
restrictions on public rallies and processions.

I can find no evidence that Colombo Airport is closed. The Sri Lankan
airlines arrivals and departures page is showing an interrupted
service for today. Of course, the airport may be closed temporarily at
any moment under the Sate of Emergency Powers.

The UK?s Foreign and Commonwealth Office has a good page of travel
advice for visitors.

?The Government of Sri Lanka has declared a state of emergency
following the assassination of the Foreign Minister in Colombo on 12
August. The state of emergency gives enhanced powers to the police
investigating the killing. Visitors should follow local developments
closely, be aware of their surroundings and avoid political gatherings
or demonstrations.?
