What is the average cost, per day, of a single web banner
advertisement on a medium-traffic page (i.e. ~500 hits per day)?

Banner ads usually cost 50 cents to 1 dollar for every 1000 hits to a
page.  So probably only 25-50cents a day if you were getting 500 hits.
