Maybe this info is copyrighted. Anyway, I started plunking away on a
piano recenlty after not playing for 30 years and last night was
trying to play "Love Is Blue" by ear but didn't seem to have the right
chords. I was starting the melody on A.

Slimmyjimmy --
How funny! Out of the "blue" I was thinking about that song the
other day! And I was trying to plunk it out on the piano by ear, too.
I used to own the sheeet music, but if I still have it, it's buried
in a box somewhere. So until someone comes up with a more accurate
accounting for the tune, here's what I came up with. I'm missing a
few chords, but I'm pretty sure I've got a good hunk of it.

I can't remember the lyrics, other than the first line, which is
"Blue, Blue, my love is blue." Now, nobody ever sang the lyrics, but
for chord purposes, I made up some "dummy" lyrics so you'll know what
goes where.

OK... I'll put the chord ABOVE the words. Hopes this works ...

D minor G7 C major A minor
Blue Blue, My Love is Blue

D minor Bflat major A minor D minor
What are the words? I do not know, do you?

D minor G7 C major A minor
Blue Blue, My Love is Blue

     B flat major
If these aren't the chords

          A major A 7 D minor
They'll just have to do.

If I figure it out more accurately, I'll repost. Meanwhile, happy playing!

"...Blue is my world when I'm without you"?

What in the world was I storing that for?

That tune was an enormously popular hit when I was in college. For a
while it was almost constantly on the jukebox in the student union.
For that reason I can't think of it without thinking of a cheeseburger
and coke.

"My WORLD is blue?" Well, that's sort of goony, don't you think?
Maybe that's why it was a big hit as an instrumental.
Just wait . . .we'll probably be hearing a rap version of it soon enough.

Enjoying everyone's comments. Seems like it was released first as an
instrumental, then later recorded with lyrics -- by Claudine Longet,
if memory serves me right.

I used to find "Love Is Blue" to be a very enjoyable song. But now I
can't hear it without thinking of a creepy episode of the TV show
"Millennium" that featured the song. The episode was called "A Room
With No View," and it seems to have permanently altered my feelings
about "Love Is Blue."

I have to agree with you, cryptica, on the manifest gooniness of "My
world is blue." However, I would also confidently assert the equal or
greater gooniness of "My love is blue." This is not a lyric that
leaps to mind when someone asks for a song that is subtle, insightful,
or rich and multilayered, is it? As you say, its popularity justly
rests on the instrumental version.
