A couple of questions to clarify exactly what you're looking for:

1. When you say "number of organizations," are you looking for
individual 'shops' or for the number of corporations within the
industry? That is, do you want the number of H&R Block offices counted
individually, or as a single organization? How about governmental
entities? At what level of granularity do you want this?

2. What about crossover? For example, would a public school be an
educational or government organization, or both?

3. By Carrier, do you mean telecommunications carrier?

4. How do you define General Enterprise?

Thanks,
Lisa.

Lisa,

I am looking for the number of organizations, e.g., within the
automotive segment of Manufacturing, General Motors and Ford, not each
Ford or GM plant. As for governmental entities, GAO, DoD, etc. To
narrow things down, pls give me only those corporations and gov't
entities with more than 1,000 employees.

A public school is an educational organization.

By Carrier, I mean telecommunications carrier.

General Enterprise relates to any corporation not in one of the other
categories listed.

Thanks.

Eric

Dear ejanszen,

I can help you out with this question substantially, however, I only
have information strictly for businesses. The governement and schools
(unless private) are not businesses.

If this information will satisfy your request, let me know.

Dear Eric,

I apologize for the long delay.

Here is the information you were looking for, worldwide.

Sector Entities	%	Entities, >1000	%
Education(a) 3,795 1% 306 0.8%
Government(b) 146 0.04% 45 0.1%
Healthcare 27,328 7% 2,647 7%
Fianancial 36,256 9% 4,242 11%
Manufacturing(c) 24,860 7% 2,325 6%
Pharma 4,786 1% 644 2%
Retail 15,509 4% 2,191 6%
Carrier 251 0.1% 58 0.1%
Other 269,423 70% 26,635 68%
Total 382,354 100% 39,093 100%

Notes: The source of this information is Onesource. I have found this
database to be very accurate for information nationally and
internationally, especially those entities that are have sales figures
greater than $500,000. Although many entities with less than those
are included, it becomes less reliable.
a) I couldn't trust the accuracy of this number because the database
is predominantly a business related information. Scanning the
information, I saw the inclusion private elementary schools, public
universities. I did not see public elementary or middle schools, for
example.
b) This sector is called Public Services and Government. Scanning the
listings, I see national research laboratories, UK postal service,
etc. However, I wouldn't consider this all inclusive for similar
reasons to (a).
c) These entities tend to be primary pure manufacturers of fabricated
goods (appliance, construction, machinery, capital goods, office
equipment, etc), chemical manufacturers, and auto/truck manufacturers.

Please let me know if I can be of more help or to clarify something.

Thank you for using Google!
