Question ID: 57536
I am considering replacing my boiler, which is 50 years old. The
heating contractor is recommending a 175,000 btu unit that operates at
about 80% efficiency. I believe we can also put in a HVAC system and
have air conditioning as well. They same contractor is recommending a
3 ton system because the house is old and the windows probably don't
have great insulation. My question is how will the operating costs
compare between these units in the winter? The effected area is
probably 1800 feet with 9-10 foot ceilings.

Thanks

What brand(s) of 175,000 BTU unit/3 ton system is he recommending?

Also, we have an old furnace/1800 sq. ft. house ourselves and, while
we can replace the furnace itself without having to redo the ductwork,
we found we would have to replace the ductwork if we wanted central AC
as well. Is this an issue for you?

Thanks.

Hi bfeltzin...

I'm like acorn... they wanted to
replace my entire ductwork due to
condensation. There's not enuf
moisture here to condense in my
opinion (at least enough to pose
a concern within an unreasonable
period of time). It sounded kinda
scammy, so I went with just a good
ventilation system.

But the reason I'm asking for a
clarification is, we might need to
know what was powering the boiler
and how you are planning on powering
the HVAC. That will help us give you
a better prediction of costs. Um, and
where you live (in general).

thanks,
-AI

Sorry for delay in getting back to you. have been out of town. I
believe the brand is a Weil-Mclain (spelling?). Regarding the
ductwork, there currenly is not ductwork so they would need to install
this in the basement. Thanks

Second clarification. We live in Chicagoland area. Current boiler is
gas powered. The HVAC system would be powered by electric I would
imagine.

Thanks.
