Ok my wife and I decided we could try and change our own car oil.
However after trying, we ran into the following problems:

Problem one: Couldn't jack the car up much at all with my new
hydraulic jack. Put the jack in the front of the car, but the tires
wouldn't even get off the ground. Suggestions for this one? Am I
jacking it up in the wrong place?

Problem two: When I managed to reach the the oil plug, the damn thing
wouldn't come off. It was worthless against my combo wrench. Ideas
there? If it helps you're talking about a 2000 Toyota Corolla.

Any gearhead Answerer able to help me out?

Just two things ... first, consult the car manual for the exact point
to place the jack. Placing the jack at other points can seriously
damage the frame and/or the body of your car. Second, the plugs of oil
tanks often require special tools for opening. Have you had a look in
the manual or a do-it-yourself book for your Toyota model to see if a
such tool is required?

Please do not get under your car whilst it is supported on a jack. If
you are determined to change your own oil then consider buying a set
of ramps to run the car onto. As you have noticed that oil plug is on
tight and giving a good pull on the wrench may well pull the cat off
the jack with possibly fatal results. YOur best bet? Let Walmart do it
for $16.

In the interest of your safety I too recommend getting the proper
drive-up ramps. A crush injury that you survive may leave you maimed.
I know of someone who was under his car when his minor error sparked
a gasoline fire.
Be safe.

Secondly, I know from experience that late-model Toyota Camrys (I
know, you have a Corolla) locate the oil FILTER in an incredibly
awkward place. To remove it the mechanics use a special filter wrench
and a cloth for their arm.
