What is your definition of a fitness center?
As a general expression, the "Turnvereins" established in German
communities in the States in the last part of the 19th century could
be considered "fitness centers".  Of course, they didn't have
treadmills and ergometers and fancy machines, but they had all the
fitness equipment known at the time.
