How would they make any money?

I mean there are going to be strings. Even if nothing else the price
the person pays to send you a fax will depend on whether the number
they have to dial is local, national, international, or satellite
rate.

Being able to receive faxes is one of the most popular requests for
Skype, but even *if* they add that service you still need to shell out
you 30E for an annual phone line to get the benefit so it won't be
free ...

If you're a techie then maybe you could install a linux PBX
(http://www.asterisk.org/) which contains the necessary fax > e-mail
software, or maybe just add something that does it yourself ... But
you'd then have to pay for a computer, telephone line, etc. In short.
Not free.

Interesting question. I look forward to an answer ;-)

actually there is at least one efax.com
http://www.efax.com/en/efax/twa/page/homePageFree

I have used them for about two years, they are very good, very reliable and free.

They do send about one email a month advertising new services but that
is a small price to pay for the service. Keep in mind this is a free
service if you want to receive faxes not to send them. If you intend
to send them this way it can be done but it is not free.

I believe they give you the free personal option so that you get used
to the service and then upgrade to the fee based comercial option at
work. I haven't done that and I have never been pressured into doing
so.
