Hi. I need a quick turn-around on this if possible. I need to know
estimated number of broadband users in the USA and Worldwide, listed
by country. Major companies only is fine. In addition, any projections
on the growth rate of broadband users in each country would be
helpful.

Hi there.

Can you explain what you mean by "...major companies only is fine"?

I hope you meant "major countries only", but if you are expecting a
listing broken out by company in each country around the world, please
make that clear.

Understand, though, that it would be a very large undertaking to try
and produce such a list.

Thanks,

pafalafa-ga

United States

Nielsen//NetRatings: September 28, 2005

?Nielsen//NetRatings, a global leader in Internet media and market
research, today announced that the number of Americans with broadband
access reached 42 percent of the U.S. population in August, increasing
16 percent since the beginning of this year (see Table 1). In January
2005, 103.8 million Americans had broadband access; by August, that
figure had grown to 120.8 million. These figures were compiled from
the Nielsen//NetRatings panel and report the connection speeds of
those with Internet access at home.?

OECD Broadband Statistics, December 2004

Broadband markets continued their rapid growth in the OECD during
2004. While all OECD countries have seen an increase in broadband
subscriptions, growth has been particularly rapid in parts of Europe.

Highlights of broadband development during 2004:

?Broadband subscribers in the OECD reached 118 million by the end of
2004, adding 34.7 million broadband subscribers during the year.?

?The OECD broadband penetration rate reached 10.3 subscribers per 100
inhabitants in 2004, up from 7.3 subscribers per 100 inhabitants in
December 2003.?

?Broadband growth has been rapid, with broadband subscriptions
increasing 41% during 2004.?

?Korea leads the OECD in broadband penetration with 24.9 subscribers
per 100 inhabitants.?

?The Netherlands moved into second place with a penetration rate of
19.0 subscribers per 100 inhabitants, followed closely by Denmark,
Iceland and Canada.?

(?)

?DSL is the leading broadband platform in 27 OECD countries. Canada,
Portugal and the United States have more cable modem than DSL
subscribers. Fibre optic is becoming a significant platform in Japan
with nearly 2.5 million subscribers, or nearly 12% of all broadband
connections in Japan.

The breakdown of broadband technologies in 2004:
     o DSL: 60%
     o Cable modem: 33.5%
o Other technologies: 6.5%, (e.g. fibre optics, LAN, satellite
and fixed wireless)?

The Majority of Global Internet Users Using A High-Speed Connection

According to ?The Face of the Web? Study From Ipsos-Insight,
Two-Thirds Of Global Internet Users Access The Internet Through
High-Speed From Any Device Or Location.

The Internet population that accessed the Internet via a broadband
connection grew by 24% since 1999.

The latest findings, based on interviews in 12 key global markets show
that the accelerated broadband adoption in 2004 resulted in less than
a third of the Internet Users relying on narrowband dial-up as their
primary access point.

In 2004, six out of ten users accessed the Internet through some
high-speed connections in the U.S.

?The highest broadband adoption, however, was seen in France, Urban
Brazil and the U.K., growing by 59%, 50%, and 45% respectively. While
dial-up access continues to be the prevalent access point in these
economies, the broadband growth trend was particularly strong.?

-----------------
Growth and Trends
-----------------

?As with the growing adoption of the Internet, consumers globally will
continue their rapid march to high-speed services as service providers
offer broadband solutions that appeal to the Internet User masses in
each country,? said Nilesh Modi, the study?s co-author and Senior
Analyst of Ipsos-Insight. ?But that is not to say it will be a while
for many, before fixed-line services will be dropped in favor of
alternatives such as cable or optical fiber or dial-up services in
favor of fixed-line broadband options.? Currently, countries can still
be divided into two camps: those relying heavily on dial-up access vs.
those who rely mainly on broadband. Dial-up regions include the urban
markets of Russia, India, Mexico, and Brazil and the European regions
of France and the U.K. For these markets, dial-up will likely move
toward fixed line high-speed options that such as DSL or ISDN.

DSL?s adoption: is the main connection globally ? accessed by half of
high-speed Users.

ISDN, also accessed through fixed-lines, is predominant in Germany,
the U.K. and Urban India.

In North America and Urban Russia cable is the predominant high-speed connection.

China and India

?? the majority of the households in urban markets of China and India
have cable television access ? the highest, in fact, relative to the
measured markets ? 97% and 96% respectively. Due to their sheer
population sizes and wide cable access, they present enormous
opportunity for future cable-broadband Internet connectivity. As these
markets continue to embrace the Internet, they may indeed opt for
cable Internet connectivity over DSL as is already noticeable in urban
India.?

The Face of the Web
To see current data simply roll your cursor over the country of interest.
http://www.ipsos-insight.com/industryfocus/techandcomm/fow_0108.htm

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Broadband Internet usage is on the increase across the world.

?In developed markets, growth rates for broadband- albeit from a small
base- have skyrocketed in recent years, increasing by some 56% between
the end of 2002 and 2003 to reach 98.8m by the end of the year,
according to ITU.?

?Although growth some regions has been rapid, the story is different
for Latin America and the Caribbean, with overall broadband
penetration levels still very low, With just 3% penetration in 2004,
Chile nonetheless boasted the highest regional broadband use. That
picture is starting to change, though, with user numbers starting to
take off in countries such as Argentina and Mexico, where incumbents
have been ramping up their broadband offerings.?

Outlook

?Despite persistent blocks to growth, future prospects for the
region?s broadband market are generally positive. Rapid levels of
Internet uptake indicate that the prospects for broadband are good,
and if prices continue to come down, regulators work to foster growth,
and new and existing access technologies are exploited to the full,
Latin America?s broadband markets can be expected to continue to grow
steadily. Certainly, the fast growth of Internet and broadband user
numbers in the region indicates a large, untapped demand for
services.?

Europe is pushing to take over the leadership of broadband growth

Russia and India are making significant appearances on the broadband scene at last

?Cable ethernet? is growing rapidly as a technology solution in many countries.?

expected to have over 1.3 million subscribers by 2008, up from 0.4
million subscribers in 2004. At the end of 2004, 13.4% of the
population in Argentina had access to internet and it is expected to

Austria
30 August 2005

?Austria has a relatively high penetration of broadband as compared to
the other European countries. ? Telekom Austria, the incumbent
operator, responded by launching DSL service in November 1999, and by
the end of 2004 it had DSLAMs installed in exchanges covering 86% of
the households in Austria.?

Canada

?Canada has been holding its place more effectively against
competition from Asia-Pacific and Europe. Canada has one of the
highest adoption rates of broadband Internet in the world, with over
5.8 million subscribers. It has more cable modems than DSL lines
although the growth in DSL has been stronger than the growth in cable
modems in the quarter-ending March 2005.?

?Chile had 3.56 broadband connections per 100 people as of March 2005,
which is the highest in Latin America. Chile had approximately 11.1%
broadband penetration in households at the end of 2004 and it is

is growing at a rate of around 8% per month (close to 100% per annum),
China Telecom being the major player. The country had 28.3 million
broadband lines as of March 2005.?

(?)

?The Chinese broadband market is ranked second in terms of total
broadband lines and is expected to surpass the USA and eventually
become the world?s largest broadband market. The main factor driving
this growth is the low DSL prices offered in the country.?
