Is there a town in Baden named "Oberechart"? Not sure of the
spelling. An ancestor lived there in the 1840s.

Dear nancyclarke,

Is it possible that the town's name is "Oberacker"?

Here are some other possibilities of sound-alike (or almost alike) names:

Eberhardtsreuth, Eberhardsreuth
Ebershardt
Ebersried
Ebersroda
Ebersroith
Ebertsried
Obergartenhof
Obergreuth
Oberhard
Oberhart
Oberharthausen
Oberhartheim
Oberhartmannsreuth
Ober Karthausen
Oberkreith
Oberkreut
Oberschrötenloh
Obertsrot

I don't know how many of these -- if any -- are in Baden, but perhaps
another researcher more familiar with Germany can offer some
additional insight.

Good luck,

pafalafa-ga

How can I find out if any of the "sound-a-like" names posted by
pafalafa-ga on 08 October are located in Baden? I've exhausted my
geography books, as most of them are current books, not showing
historical names. I must locate the town where my g grandfather
emmigrated from to continue the geneological pursuit. Thanks. and
HELP!!! nancy

Dear nancyclarke,

Of the towns and villages my colleague pafalafa-ga listed, only
Obertsrot is located in Baden. But it does not sound much like
"Oberechart", so I am quite certain that Oberacker is the place you
are looking for. Would you accept this as an answer? If so, I could
also provide you contact information for local authorities that might
be useful for you, such as the civil register office or the competent
church offices.

I would like to point out that I am German, located in Germany, and
that I have done lots of genealogical and historical research for
Google Answers customers. If you would like me to support you in your
genealogical research for your ancestors from Baden, I'd gladly help
you. In that case, please feel free to post an additional new question
that refers to me.

Regards,
Scriptor

I would like to add that there are former limestone quarries near Oberacker.

I don't know. The spelling could be phonetic. I know that the family
had a lime kiln. Does the town of oberacker have lime deposits? If
so, this could be the place.

Nancy,
Scriptor was clever to find a possible place name for your
"Oberechart". Oberacker is a very small village, apparently now
incorporated in larger town, but it doesn't seem like place that would
have had a lime kiln back then. Oberacker means "the upper acre OR
upper field", the kind of place name that would refer to a very small
settlement - maybe just one farm originally.
Oberacker is also a family name in Germany, perhaps relating to that
place, but possibly to others that never got on the map, and some
emigrated to the States.

Scriptor is even more clever with genealogical searches. A new
question with as much information about that ancestor as possible
might be more helpful for you.
