Hi!

I can only find up to a 25 year comparison between "real estate" vs
the S&P. Would this be ok as an answer?

Thanks!

I Really need to go back at least 50 years. I found a ton of
information from 1980 to 2001 from forbes and fool.com.

Ryan,

Probably the best (certainly the most prominent) long term info on
housing investments comes from Yale economist Robert Shiller, who
coined the phrase "irrational exuberance" and passed it on to Alan
Greenspan.

His plot of housing prices for the past century or so can be seen here:

As you can see, the boom of the past six or seven years stands out in
sharp contrast to the longer-term trends of the graph.

It could certainly be compared head to head with a graph of the S&P
for various periods, if that would meet your needs.

However, I think you can see that comparison would be very sensitive
to the selection of starting years for any period -- the returns from
1945 to 1965 are quite a bit different than those from 1940 to 1960,
say.

Let me know if this looks like a good data source, and if so, how you
would like me to proceed.

Exuberantly,

that looks good. Though what i really need is data so I can make an
easy comparison like in this article from forbes
http://www.forbes.com/realestate/2005/05/27/cx_sc_0527home.html or
this article from fool.com
http://www.fool.com/news/foth/2002/foth020404.htm. Anything going
back at least 50 years would be great. Stats comparison would be fine
