Hello askip, In 2004, the average time between pitches in Major League Baseball was approximately 26.3 seconds. Scott -- The average MLB games have been running between 2:45 and 2:56. There's a 2-minute break between each half of the inning (though umpires have been known to snip it short). Here's a Baseball Prospectus study that you may find useful: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=1118 Note that there's high variance in time-between-pitches, particularly because when there are runners on-base, it's the pitcher's responsibility to hold them close to the base. Of course there are certain pitchers who take very little time between pitches. For example, the pitcher Mark Buehrle of the White Sox is known for his practice of wasting no time in throwing a pitch. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FCI/is_5_64/ai_n14702595 And then there are other pitchers who seem to wait for the planets to align every time they want to throw a pitch. |
