Yesterday when I logged on to my PC , all my MS WORD and EXCEL files have become 0kb.I have very important data.I tried recovering these files with using WORD REGENERATOR AND EXCEL REGENERATOR BY dmitriy primochenko but these softwares recovered lost data instead of repairing saved ones.So I would like to know 1)If I can retreive data from these 0kb word and excel documents 2)Are there any softwares available which can recover data from these documents | |

sudheerdrani... Thanks for accepting my work on your behalf as an answer. I'll repeat it here for the sake of future readers: --------------------------------------------------------- A simple test will tell you whether any recovery is possible. Word documents have a .doc file extension, and Excel files have an .xls file extension. Copy one of each of these files that indicate 0kb to another directory where you can play with them without damaging the originals. Rename both of them with a .txt file extension, and then click on them to open them in notepad. If you see no content whatsoever, they are indeed 0kb, and there is no content to recover. If they have more that a line or two of content, then something's wrong with Windows in that it's indicating 0 content when content actually exists. This could be the results of a virus or some other malfeasance. This test will tell you one way or the other. --- All I can suggest at this point is that you take a look at the Date Modified for these files in Windows Explorer. You may be able to associate some activity with that time slot, or relate it to who was using the computer. Look for events at that time by going to Start -> Run, and type in eventvwr.msc and hit Enter. This will let you see any system error messages that might coincide with the time of the file modifications. sublime1-ga Searches done, via Google: "word files" OR "excel files" 0kb ://www.google.com/search?q=%22word+files%22+OR+%22excel+files%22+0kb word OR excel "0kb files" ://www.google.com/search?q=word+OR+excel+%220kb+files%22 |

This is for sure a virus atack. Some 4 years ago there was a virus that precisly did what u have mentioned. Unfortunately there is no know "cure" to recover the data. Try searching for ~*.xls ~*.doc. These are temporary files created by Microsoft and may be some of your data may be there. Best of luck- it pains to loose data !!!!! |

If you are using windows XP or ME you might try to 'restore back to date before your documents disappeared. Good luck :) Piney |
