Question ID: 57695
We have a Tv transmitter for which we require to purchase the
following parts and hence need details where we can buy them:

* Carbon Resister 100 OHMS,5 Watts,Quantity Required 50.

* Micro Film Resisters 100 OHMS,10 Watts,Quantity Required 50

To be able to provide you with a satisfactory answer, I need the
following information:

- Are the resistors standard electronic components, or should they
have any special connectors/housings/etc.?
- Do you require these components to be sold from a retailer in the
country where you reside? In that case, what is this country?

Clarification of Question by ronim-ga on 23 Aug 2002 03:19 PDT
We would like to buy the components anywhere in the USA or Europe
since we are located in Uganda,Africa no such retailers exist.

On your clarification on the housing of the resistors I will revert
shortly after consulting our technical guys.

Thanks

Another clarification request: By "micro film resisters", do you mean
"metal film resistors"? Do you require both carbon film and metal[?]
film resistors, or can one type replace the other?

Clarification of Question by ronim-ga on 23 Aug 2002 05:01 PDT
Further to your clarification required on the technical details:

1) The resistors are standard electronic components.

2) The carbon resister is cylindrical in shape with the connecting
wire coming out one from each end.

3) The microfilm resister is square in shape (1 cm x 1 cm approx. and
about 1 mm thick) with the connecting flat copper strip coming out one
from each side (left and right) which itself is about 1.2 cm long and
2 mm in dia.

Clarification of Question by ronim-ga on 23 Aug 2002 05:57 PDT
To answer your second clarification, our technical guys have reverted
as follows:

" WE NEED BOTH MICROFILM RESISTERS AND CARBON RESISTERS AS INITIALLY
MENTIONED. THE WAY TO DETERMINE WHETHER A RESISTER IS METAL /
MICROFILM IS THAT IN A METAL RESISTER THE METAL IS MORE THAN THE OTHER
MATERIAL AND IN A MICROFILM, THE MATERIAL IS MORE THAN THE METAL. AS
THE RESISTORS WE NEED HAVE MORE OF THE OTHER MATERIAL, IT IS A
MICROFILM RESISTOR."

I hope this helps and if you can help us in locating where we can buy
these parts urgently for our TV trasmittar I would be willing to
increase the search fees to $100 if it is the correct parts etc..

Additionally if it would help I could e-mail you an image of what the
parts look like. Pl advice.

I have been able to locate a dealer who sells 100 ohm, 5W carbon film
resistors at a reasonable price (US$ 0.20/each), and this supplier is
shipping to Uganda at a moderate shipping cost (US$7 for air mail).
However, I have great difficulty locating any dealer who sells "micro
film resistors/resisters" of any type. Could you please look at the
pictures at http://www.rcdcomponents.com/rcd/resistors.htm and tell me
if any of the components there look like what you are missing?

Thanks..I will get the technical guys to have a look and get back. Its
5.30pm and with the weekend here i will revert on monday.
Have a good weekend.

After having discussed your problem with a professional within the
electronics field, I am able to answer your question.

100 ohm, 5W carbon film resistors can be ordered as part no. R100R5W
from Futurlec (http://www.futurlec.com/Res5W.html), they charge
US$0.20 each. Futurlec will ship to Uganda and charge US$4 for
airmail shipping for orders less than US$30. Payment can be done via
credit card (MasterCard, Visa, American Express), cheque or money
order.

For the 100 ohms, 10 watts micro film resistors, I initially had
problems finding a standard electronic component with this
description. Your engineers have probably requested "micro film
resisters" because they need components that are not inductive - i.e.
components that will not be influenced by the electromagnetic energy
generated by the transmitter.

For this kind of speciality components, Caddock
(http://www.caddock.com/) is a recommended manufacturer. You can find
fact sheets for their products at
http://www.caddock.com/Online_catalog/current_sense/current_sense.html
. For your specific request, one of the products described in
http://www.caddock.com/Online_catalog/Mrktg_Lit/MP9000_Series.pdf
should be adequate. This is a PDF document, the Adobe Acrobat Reader
(http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html) is required to
view or print the data sheet. I would recommend that you print this
document and pass it on to your engineers, so that they can select the
particular component that is most suited to your needs.

You can find a list of Caddock's distributors at
http://www.caddock.com/contact/dist.html

To suggest a price for the product you need, I have selected one
Caddock resistor that should be close to what you want, the MP915.
Allied Electronics in USA sell this product, and their online catalog
(http://www.alliedelec.com/search.asp) gives the following details:

  Mfr.'s Part #: MP915 100 1%
  Allied Stock #: 524-6202
  Manufacturer: CADDOCK
  Description: Resistor, Power Film, TO126, Radial, 15Watts, 5%, 100
Ohms

  Min. Order Qty.: 1

  1 - 9 US$2.7700 each
  10 - 24 US$2.5200 each
  25 - 49 US$2.3100 each
  50 - 99 US$2.1300 each
  100+ US$1.9800 each

A PDF fact sheet is available at
http://www.alliedelec.com/catalog/pf.asp?FN=740.pdf

You should not worry about the power rating (15 W), this is a maximum
rating and it should not matter that it is greater than what you
requested. Please note that the resistor must be mounted on a cooling
rib to function properly at maximum power.

I hope that this information fulfils your needs.

Search strategy:
I searched on Google with variations of these search terms:
5W "carbon film resistors"
10W "micro film resistors"

However, much of the information was obtained by discussions with a
electronics professional, and by searching in the mentioned companies'
online directories/catalogues.

Thanks. The egineer is away on a break but will be in on Thursday when
I will get him to have a look and confirm if the part is correct.

I will be on vacation until September 2nd, and I will probably not be
able to handle any further clarification requests until then.

By the way, someone has told me about a flaw in my statement of the
properties of non-inductive components. It is quite technical, and I
doubt that you would want me to elaborate on it - my conclusions and
recommendations are still valid.

Thanks. We have ordered resistors slightly different from what our
exact requirements were but hopefully they will work when we receive
them-will let you know as soon as they arrive.
In the meantime I had posted an addendum if you can locate the
resistors I would up the search fee from the $ 25 posted initially to
$ 100-how do I change this?Pl advise then the case may be closed (with
a bit of luck).

I am glad that Google Answers has been able to provide you with the
information you needed. Unfortunately, this service does not have any
"tipping" feature; that is, you cannot change the search fee once the
question has been answered.

If you are particularly satisfied with an answer, the easiest way of
paying an extra amount to the researcher is to post another question
with a search fee of the desired extra amount. If you wish to
increase my payment from $25 to $100, you should post a question like
this:

"Subject: For blazius-ga ONLY
This question is intended as a bonus payment for blazius-ga for his
work with another question
(https://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=57695). If
anyone else answers it, I will ask for a refund."

Price the question at $75. I will answer the question when I see it
and receive the extra payment.

I do hope that the parts will work with your equipment, please use
Google Answers again if you run into further problems.

I'm a bit curious - were you able to get the correct supplies for your
transmitter? I hope that things turned out to work fine.

Yes thanks the parts sorted out the problem but a few months later we
scrapped the old transmitter and bought a new one. Thanks again.

Efficiently answered the question and we were (hopefully) able to
track down the spares which we couldn't locate for a year.
