I am a female OB/GYN in a major Canadian city, who is frustrated with
the cutbacks and restrictions forced upon my practice by the Canadian
medical system --including my ability to properly care for my
patients. I need suggestions for alternate business or career
opportunities I could pursue, where I would be able to use my medical
training as a springboard to something else (free of the medical
system?s bureaucracy). Family and other considerations prevent me
from moving. I would be open to starting a business or consulting
service in fields where there is a proven demand.

Hello cambridge1-ga,

My research shows that many physicians share your dissatisfaction and
that female OB/GYNs feel particularly pressured. I?ve collected a
variety of articles to help you think and strategize about how you can
use your medical degree in alternate fields. I?ve included several
articles that name specific avenues that you can explore and some of
them link you to companies that offer alternate career opportunities
to doctors.

The same general rules apply to doctors considering career transition
as apply to other jobs. I found several resources dedicated to helping
doctors with their career issues. I?ve also found a couple of sites
where physicians can discuss their concerns and ask for input from
their peers in online discussion forums. You might want to join these
to continue your explorations.

Although you didn?t name the Canadian city where you?re located, I
looked at your other questions and I believe you?re in Vancouver and
are interested in opportunities in British Columbia. I?ve included a
selection of resources to help you review the economic environment in
BC and to help you identify industries and companies that might be
suitable in case you want to leave clinical practice.

I made some assumptions in answering your question. Please don?t
hesitate to ask for clarification if I misunderstood what you?re
looking for or if the information I?ve provided is not clear.

Best wishes for career satisfaction and success.

Medical Economics
The corporate world can provide benefits and a steady paycheck, but
those come with trade-offs, the author explains.

Physicians who do examine alternative careers frequently look to the
corporate world. Although some elect to start businesses of their own,
for others the allure of a steady paycheck and benefits from an
employer are difficult to ignore.

Given the enormously exciting development of clinical-decision support
systems, many physicians investigate companies that specialize in
healthcare information technology. These doctors assume that since
they're highly educated, used to making quick decisions, and
successful in running their practices, they'll rise swiftly up the
corporate ladder.

Here Come the Hospitalists
Young physicians in growing numbers are electing to go into hospital
medicine, a fast-growing field that was hardly ?on the map? a few
years ago.

One of the fastest growing medical specialties is a field that barely
existed a decade ago: hospital medicine. Variously called hospitalists
or inpatient physicians, doctors who practice hospital medicine ? most
are trained in general internal medicine ? usually work solely within
hospitals, caring for patients from the time they are admitted to the
time they?re discharged. Unlike most other specialties, hospital
medicine is organized around the site of care, not a particular organ
or disease

Taking your medical degree in a new direction

Non-clinical fields where a medical degree comes in handy are numerous
and varied. In addition to opportunities in pharmaceuticals,
insurance, utilization review, biotechnology, health systems, risk
management, occupational health, and academia, physicians can earn a
living as consultants, lecturers, and writers. Indeed, Robert F.
Priddy, executive director of PhysicianCareerNetwork in Englewood, CO,
maintains that physicians who apply for a nonclinical medical job have
a leg up on the competition. "You can reasonably tell a potential
employer, 'I meet all your needs, plus I have a medical degree.' "

my own schedule for an internet company called Medcases.com, located

clinical work ($1,000 per case), but the work schedule is flexible.

Assess Your Skills When Considering an Alternative Career

If you are faced with circumstances that limit your ability to
practice medicine, such as a health impairment or a restriction on
your practice or your license, there are resources and methods that
can guide your transition to an alternative and rewarding career.

First, ask yourself what skills and experience you have that will
transfer to non-clinical careers. Developing an inventory of skills
and accomplishments is a prerequisite to knocking on doors and is
helpful to do even before you start networking. Leading your own
clinical practice does build organizational skills ? to a point.
However, navigating in a peer-to-peer world is most valuable as you
start to venture outside of your closely controlled clinical practice.

Examples of health care domain skills are as follows:
 -- Clinical trials management
 -- Medical informatics
 -- Health network development
 -- Utilization management
 -- Clinical process improvement
 -- Legal medicine
 -- Ethics in medicine
 -- Health policy

The book uses first-person narratives that give voice to the
dramatically wide range of career opportunities: from professionals
involved in direct patient care, such as doctors, nurses, social
workers, dentists, and midwives, to those careers that are more often
played out behind the scenes, like biomedical scientist, medical
administrator, lawyer, pharmacist, ethicist, academic, and
epidemiologist. As of last year, the field of "medical services"
employed 12.3 million people, making it the nation's third-largest
industry employer (behind trade and manufacturing), according to the
Employment Policy Foundation's 2002 "American Workplace Report."
